The Fine art of RP: Pose Order
Hello again my darlings! Tis I, Rarity; a queen of fashion, a pony of passion, and the type of pony everypony should know! This is another fashionable, fabulous class: The Fine art of Role Play and tonight’s lesson is one I’ve been meaning to get to for quite some time. That’s right, you’ve guessed it: Pose Order!
Oh, yes, this is quite the sticky subject with a lot of you. Some of you live by it, others of you are flexible with it, and still, some of you don’t care for it at all! Well, dear, I’m here to try and help clear up a few issues about this subject, in another addition of “The Fine Art of Role Play!
But, Darling, before I get into this, theres something I simply MUST Address: These views discussed below are simply my own opinions and not such that of Equestira Muck’s Staff, or the hard working wizards that run our little corner of the web!
Now, darling, with that being said, lets jump right into this sticky subject. Pose Order is the concept of taking turns when telling your part of the story, that involves the RP your currently participating in.
For example, Pony X wanders into Sugar Cube Corner, where Twilight, Pinkie and Applejack are having a conversation. The conversation order goes as follows:
Apple Jack
Twilight
Pinkie
And it continues like that, Applejack, Twilight, Pinkie, over and over and over again. That means there’s a certain flow to the story that’s taking place, and Pony X wants to enter and interact with our Mane Six. Well that’s just fine. Lets say for example, Pony X enters after Apple Jack.
Applejack turns towards Twilight with a quiet snort, nodding her head. “Sure he’s cute but I reckon I can’t see him like that, him bein’ muh big brother n’ all. But he ain’t taken, iffn’ that’s what ya’ll askin.” Apple jack grins with a wink.
Pony X enters the Shop with a quiet grin, and a saddlebag strapped to her side. “Hello Ponies! I’m new in town, how are you?” She asks looking towards the three in the room.
Twilight gives a quiet blush and shakes her head, dark purple locks fluttering with her sheepish nature at the subject. “W, what? No oh, no! That’s not what I meant! I…um…” She quickly turns towards Pony X, grateful for the distraction of the embarrassing subject. “Hello! Welcome to Ponyville!”
Pinkie is trying her best to keep her giggles in check when Twilight accidently embarrasses herself asking about Applejack’s brother having a girlfriend. Her quiet jubilation at the concept, however, explodes into a great glittering burst of cheer when a NEW pony wanders in! A NEW pony! That’s an excuse for a PARTY! “HIYA! I’m Pinkie Pie! Oooo, Welcome to Pony Villie, do you like Parties?!”
Applejack grins quietly herself, turning towards the new comer, and giving Twilight a break. “Well Howdy! Welcome ta pony Ville! I reckon yer hungry, so you’ve come to the right place! This here is sugar cube corner, Pinkie’s Domain, but iffn’ ya’ll interested in something a might more healthier than this here sugar fest, come on down ta Sweet Apple Acres!” The orange mare exclaims.
Pony X giggles quietly and dips her head towards the cheerful ponies greeting her this evening. “Thank you guys! I’m AM new here, and that sounds wonderful, er, a party, that is! I haven’t had a party in a while! Thank you!” Pony X exclaims to Pinkie, before turning towards Applejack. “I’ll have to drop by, I love Apples! All kinds!!”
Now, that, darlings, is a way to RP! Now, as you can see, the pose order speaks for itself. AppleJack, Pony X, Twilight, Pinkie, Apple Jack, Pony X.
That’s the concept at least. It keeps RP in a concise order and lets you, the player know when it’s time for your pose. In this case, as Pony X, you know that your next pose, is going to be after Apple Jack, because that’s when you entered the story.
While it keeps things in order, there’s a more important point for the concept of pose order: It lets everybody have a turn! Here in Ponyville, we DO believe in sharing and taking turns is of the utmost importance dear. It’s simply divine and it allows one to show off an ability to tell a story. That is the most important part of a pose order darling, letting everybody take a turn, and letting everybody share their part of the story!
Of course, there ARE those whom don’t believe in pose order, and there are those whom have never heard of it. There are even those whom don’t LIKE it (But why you wouldn’t want order to the chaos of trying to tell a story with 10 ponies, I wouldn’t know) and there are some whom flat out hate the concept.
Well, darling, I can sympathize with them, truly I can. When you’ve used to chat rooms, AOL, and Ustreams, where everyone is talking but no one is really listening to each other, it can be rather jarring to step into a world as slow paced as this. But I simply MUST stress that this ISN’T an AOL chat room, or a U Stream, or any other chat room where writing whatever pops into your head is the norm. This requires a little finesse! A little bit of charm, a little bit of patience.
And what of the ponies whom are idle, or quite simply not paying attention! (Well, dear if you’re to be part of an RP it’s terrible form to force others to wait for your pose longer than five minutes. You’re holding up the line!) But things happen. It’s impossible to deny that!
“So what part of Equestira are ya’ll from?!” Apple Jack asks, eyes glancing over Pony X’s features. “I’d say Trottinham!”
(Pony X takes 14 minutes to response)
Pony X smiles warmly. “I’m from Fillydelphia!”
Now, the problem with this, darling, is that we are of an age where attention spans are not quite what they used to be. Waiting 15 minutes for one pony to respond to a single question is preposterous AND not only that, it makes the other ponies wait for you and on top of THAT everybody who is using pose order, will need YOUR pose to continue the story! And in ADDITON, there is a chance that other ponies, have grown so tired of waiting for you, they may have wandered off to do something else, thus they shall be longer to return to pose.
Pony X says “Hey guys what’s up I’m from PhillyDelphia!” She wanders in, smiling and nods her head, looking towards Applejack, Twilight and Pinkie. “I’m new in town! Looking for a place with some good food!” Pony X Explains.
“Well Howdy! I’m AppleJack, and welcome to Ponyville! This here is Sugar Cube Corner, and these here are muh friends Twilight Sparkle, and Pinkie Pie. We’re just talkin about the Winter Time Solace comin’ up. Pull up a chair!”
Apple Jack says warmly.
(At this point, Twilight is writing her pose, to respond to Pony X, but before she can finish the first sentence, Pony X jumps ahead of her to respond to Applejack. This gives an potential impression that Pony X does not care that Twilight is working on a pose. Her response is more important that somepony else. )
“Cool, thanks! I’d love to! Whats up! Whats the winter Solstice?” Pony X asks, and sits down at the table with the other two. “Sugar Cube Corner?! That’s awesome! I’m totally gonna spend my days here! I love sugar! Awesome to meet you, AppleJack, Twilight, Pinkie! Hey, you guys wanna hang out?!“
Really, that does seem somewhat rude. Twilight and Pinkie are working on their poses, which now must change due to the response Pony X gave to Applejack. To that extent, Pinkie Pie, who’s basing her response on Twilight must wait for Twilight to work over her pose again, making additional changes.
There is no need to respond to EVERYpose every pony makes the instant they make it. Take a breath, and let some other ponies have a turn. In your next pose, you can respond to each individual that's had something to offer to the story. Specifically when ponies respond like this, with rapid fire one or two line poses (And that's not to say there's ANYTHING wrong with two line poses.) It becomes disruptive to the scene. (Unless this is the type of scene it is in the first place, and we'll touch on that in a moment.)
So Looking at both situations, dear, it may seem like I’m playing the advocate for not using pose order. In reality, I’m one of those ponies that swear by it. But I can understand the desires of not using it. And this is before we even get into the stipulations of amendments and other situations where skipping a turn is appropriate. When two ponies are having a specific conversation, when somepony is idle, when there are 15 ponies in the room, and trying to follow the pose order is to a point where it’s almost utterly impossible.
So what I suppose I’m trying to say, darling, is use your own discretion. If it looks like ponies are taking turns, then by all means, PLEASE take turns. If it seems casual and unrestricted, go nuts! If you aren’t sure if you should pose, or what the situation is, ASK! It’s not that hard, I assure you, it isn’t! It truly isn’t! But the important thing, is interacting with the other ponies in the room. But If you wander in, and start acting like you honestly don’t give a horse apple and every pony else is trying to take turns, you certainly aren’t going to be make a fashionable impression. Going against the grain, dear is something that will disrupt the RP and make it far less fun for everybody else involved. This leads to arguments, this leads to hurt pony feelings, and it leads to a situation that is overall, less desirable for everypony. Please be mindful of the room, the environment, and the situation you’re entering.
(And whether you use pose order or not, PLEASE, EVERYPONY, give Programmer Pony a huge hug and a gold star for all of his hard work! He actually implemented a pose order program onto the muck and that must have taken quite a lot of hard work!)
