OOC Date: February 17, 2013
Characters: Firefly, Medley, Mimic, Barnstormer, Nightshade
Setting: Luna's Squire meets an old friend, and Nightshade encounters Mimic and discuss magic and the Empire
Firefly is just walking down the street, not really paying much attention to the locals. She never liked Canterlot. Too status minded.
There is a loud rush of cold wind as Medley lands in Canterlot with a spread of her green wings, shortly after Barnstormer who is obviously faster than her. "Told you the South Eastern winds are faster! That is an awesome current." With a pump of her hoof, she trots towards the square.
Mimic is outside the University proper, resting on one of the benches with her cloak pulled tight to ward off the winter chill. A book is resting in front of her and a quill hovering in aurora-like red magic is writing down notes in crisp, archaic-looking script as she squints in deep thought at what is being written.
Barnstormer speeds along a bit, leaving nearly a candycane colored trail behind her. "It's a quick one," she admits before flapping out her wings and slows for descent, landing and then looking around.
Nightshade canters after Firefly, hoping to catch the beginning of Night Court should it happen to occur outside. An unusual venue, for sure, but it would definitely attract the common folk. "Lady Firefly, you are heading to the main square, I presume?"
Firefly has no trouble getting around. The locals tend to part a bit to the sides, despite her working for the Princess and having run of the Palace, they learned long ago Firefly liked her space. Setting a local or two aflame gets the idea across. Besides, it was just Ponyrattzi, and nopony liked them anyways. She hmms? and looks over her shoulder to Nightshade. "I have no destination in mind to be honest. The Princess feels ponies might me more willing to bring issues forward if met on their own grounds. The Palace intimidates many of them for some reason."
Mimic flicks an ear at mention of princesses moreso than air currents, for a unicorn doesn't have a terrible concern when it comes to the weather, and the crystal-coated pony shifts her gaze over one shoulder towards the arrival of several ponies in the nearby vicinity. She slowly crosses one forehoof over the other, horn still gleaming with liquid red magic as it continues to write in the book even without her eyes on it.
"There she is! Hey! Firefly!" Medley calls out to her best friend as she waves a hoof wildly in her direction before taking to sky once more, soaring over towards her with a quick burst of her wings. Once she lands, she is all smiles. Her mane has been chopped up a bit and dyed blonde at the tips and she is wearing a Cloudsdale University white hoodie. "Hey Firefly, this is my friend Barnstormer by the way. Her father is a Wonderbolt. Oh! I also got you something from Manehatten. I went on vacation with Rainbow Dash and Merryweather last week and thought you'd like this."
"mmm, so she is," Stormie says, then adds, "I guess." She's never met the pony so... She flaps her wins to now just follow along, dropping back to the ground soon after in a little trot. "Hey," she says with a light smile, nodding her head. "Good to meet you."
Nightshade glances back at the Palace, its tall marble and limestone towers looming opulently over the whole city. "I think I can guess," she replies, catching up to the Squire and remaining just back and to her left, as protocol demands. She looks around, spotting more than a few ponies gazing with curiosity at the two of them, whispering to each other. Nightshade peers also at Medley and Barnstormer, observing them carefully. Each of them had at least one entry in one of the many intelligence reports she's read. Most interesting that they should be here together.
Firefly pauses, turns to glare at the whispering ponies, grinning as they go quiet and seem to vanish in a swoosh, suddenly not wanting to be noticed so much. Firefly laughs a bit to Nightshade. "Large rocks, must me." then perks an ear. "Medley!" flaring her wings as her friend lands. "What brings you up to Canterlot?" then pauses. "Or down to Canterlot." laughing as Medley explains. "Ohh, hello there." nodding to the new pony. "Manehattan you say? I do not think I have ever been there." peering curiously.
Mimic shifts back her ears ever so faintly as a trickle of magic curls free of her horn to pull her cloak tighter even as the quill continues to write. Faceted-like eyes squint thoughtfully towards the new crowd who seems, at least in part, to know one another and it seems to bring a soft, slow exhale from the unicorn before she turns back to her book with the softest crease of a frown on her muzzle.
"I came to see you! Rumor was you were holding Night Court out here and since Barnstormer has a Wonderoblt party to get to with her father later, figured I could do two things at once." Medley plucks her saddlebag open and takes out a package, hoofing it over. "Anyways, I need to talk to you about.. you know.. our adventure we had together before coming here. Um.. I've been having these dreams." She rubs the back of her neck. "And I the more I think about it, the more I realize that.. I think I'm missing a few things here and there. As if there're right at the edge but I can't quite pull it in you know what I mean? So err -- think you can help me fill in some details?"
Stormie has no idea there'd be anypony keeping a file on her. She's interesting, but only in a sports star sort of way, not really in any matters of state. Still, she blinks a bit, her head tilting. "Dreams? I thought you were here to give her a gift?" She quirks a brow, "There's adventure now? Did I miss adventure? Aw."
Nightshade knows that the Wonderbolts (and as a corollary their families) have an entire intel file all to themselves, and that makes perfect sense. After all, they are Equestria's greatest military asset outside the two Squires (who also merit their own files). She says nothing for now, merely watching and listening as Medley and Barnstormer express themselves. She can feel that somepony else is nearby, though, a very peculiar magical signal coming from...ah, that unicorn. She glances at Mimic for a moment or two, finding her peculiar...
Firefly lifts an ear as Medley explains a slight memory loss. "Do forgive me a moment then Medley," letting a soft breeze set her gift down before her. "Do not be afraid young one, I am merelt going to have a look at Medley's life essense, to see if everything is allright. I might change a bit, but do not want you to be startled." grinning as she flares her wings slowly, and with a soft BAMF sound, her wings vanish, replaced with wings of black flame, her eyes have shifted and look more like Nightmare Moon now, dragonic in nature, glowing green as she looks Medley over. Then just as easily, she nods and with a soft BAMF shifts back to herself. "See? Nothing scary. I just had to make sure Medley was not a changeling." smiling gently. "And fear not Medley, the Overlord is GONE." lifting her gift, opening it. "Now then, what have we here?"
A crystal unicorn certainly counts as peculiar considering none have been spotted even amongst the reborn Empire, but here one is sitting on a Canterlot bench. Mimic seems focused on whatever she's writing in the thick book in front of her, the pages almost translucent with age and glowing faintly with the magic that holds it and the quill in a nimbus of red who's colors shift and flicker from deeper hues to pale. A crack sounds from the quill in front of her and the magic cracks briefly and turns to a heavy and deep purple, but it's gone as quickly as the unicorn startles and she frowns at the spreading ink blot from the broken quill tip. The magic fades as she sighs and looks to the ponies speaking, "..er, excuse me, would any of you have a spare quill handy? I really need to get this written down and mine just broke."
"Yeah uh --.. wait, what are you doing? Geez.. that's.. uh... pretty creepy.." Medley trails off as Firefly changes and starts to cast her magic. "Yeah, I know the Overlord is gone but that doesn't.. fill in the gaps that I'm having here." She sighs out loudly. "Look, when.. Twilight, Bow Tie, you, me and Apple Jack.. I mean.. that did happen, right? When we used the Rainbow of Light to defeat him and.. and we saved Equestria from his rule? It's just that there is something missing." She bites her lip, chewing on it. Inside the package is a Manehatten Tornados Jersey in home colors. Their favorite sports team as fillies.
Oh yes, that's not /creepy at all/. Stormie stare a moment, then takes a step or two back. "Ah..." she says, feeling more than a little out of place now. She fidgets forehooves against the ground and looks about a moment.
A quill suddenly apparates out of pure shadow right in Mimic's vicinity. Nightshade looks at the other unicorn a bit longer, hoping she'll look up and see her helper. In the meantime, she's also a witness to Firefly's power, but her face shows no reaction (as usual). She is familiar with this power, even if she had scant chance to witness it for herself. Medley's story, on the other hand, is a bit unnerving. She'd read the files on this Overlord after no small effort on her part to obtain them, and this business Medley is describing seems...very off somehow. Most concerning...
Firefly ooohs and grins. "I do love tornadoes." nodding. "Not as much as lightning, but a close second. Thanks!" then looks over to teh un-quilled pony as Nightshade re-quills her. She then grins to Barnstormer. "I tend to think it's kinda awesome really." watching Nightshade again. "Always thought it'd be cool to hover things like that...or magic them up." extending a wing. There were three back feathers in her pink trailing edge, spaced nicely apart. "My old booms from the Princesses back home are gone also, in favor of Luna's own three boons...one of whish you just saw, the ability to see a creature's magical life essense. Every race has a unique glow about them that makes them stand apart, no matter their magic shifted shapes or spells of illusion." smiling. "The flaming wings are just cool, but don't DO anything sadly."
Mimic regards the shadow-quill more with a tip of her head out of interest as opposed to surprise and her magic returns, red once more, to pluck it delicately from the air. She shifts her eyes towards Nightshade and dips her head to the other unicorn. "Thank you. Nothing worse than being quill-less when you just have to write something down." She says in a quiet voice before she touches the tip of the quill to the blotch of ink and, with a shiver of the page, the ink is drawn back up into the quill and the page returned to it's blemish-free finish.
<OOC> Firefly would bet it has micro-dot magical transcription, so whatever it writes is duplicated in a secret book somewhere else too.
Furrowing her brows, Medley looks confused before giving her head a slight shake. With a look over to Barnstormer, her shoulders lift upwards. "..So, you ready to go to your place and get ready for your party?"
Barnstormer looks to Medley a moment, "Uh," she says, "If you want, but you seemed to have some...big stuff here. Did you get everything you needed?"
<OOC> Mimic says, "Ooh, that is a good idea, Firefly."
Nightshade breaks off from Firefly's side briefly to speak with this strange unicorn, walking over to her. "You are quite welcome...miss." She looks very closely at the other unicorn's eyes, noticing a characteristic crystalline glimmer. "You are from the Empire, I see," she states, finally realizing why this pony seemed a little 'off'. "How are you finding our fair Realm?"
<OOC> Firefly grins.
<OOC> Firefly can't take credit sadly, is from an old Black and white horror film. magician gave a book and quill to a 'friend', another mage, and had a second book. Anything the quill wrote in one book, appeared exactly the same in the other.
<OOC> Mimic says, "Actually it's a brilliant idea, considering why Mimic is here. "
<OOC> Firefly giggles and nods.
"Ah, I am, yes." The crystal unicorn confirms as she finishes the final bit of what she's writing in quick order and closes the book to seal it with an old brass band and lock around it that long ago tarnished. The Empire's crest is stamped on the front. "And it's Mimic. My name, that is. "...Canterlot is a splendid place. I did take a brief venture into Ponyville. I've never seen such a small, quaint town but then... well, I've been a bit.. sequestered for some time."
Firefly perks an ear. "Party? Now, where is a party going on -here- anyhoof?"
"Oh. Barnstormer's father is having this big charity get together and I can't come cuz' there are no tickets left but I figured I'd at least help Stormy get ready, maybe snag some dinner with her before hoof." Medley says though she gives a subtle shake of the head to Barnstormer. No, no answers. She is more confused than ever.
Barnstormer gives Medley a nudge with a wing, but then nods, "Yeah we can.. go get something to eat if you want," she notes with a light smile.
<OOC> Nightshade hopes you don't mind the lorecrafting
<OOC> Mimic chuckles and has to make up a lot as she goes.
<OOC> Firefly grins and thinks Night has enough notes its not really crafting.
<OOC> Firefly Nightshade IS the original Order of Whispers.
"I recall that the Empire doesn't have many small towns...or any, for that matter." Given what she's read about the Empire and its technology it's no wonder that nation was such a danger to Equestria over a millenium ago, even before Sombra rose to power. "I do apologize if our Elemental system of magic seems simplistic to you, but certain accommodations have had to be made for the sake of public order."
<OOC> You say, "Order of Whispers?"
Firefly may appear to not really be paying attention, but her ears work just fine. Without looking she does say, "Welcome to Canterlot Mimic, if you need any assistance feel free to ask." grinning to Medley and Barnstormer. "A charity party that doesn't accept extras? They must not really need the bits after all. That IS kind of the point to it, get as many guests as possible." then grins. "And who says you can't go? A Royal Guest would -never-be turned down." grinning. "Or," perking her ears. "We could go to the Red Velvet here. They have wonderful ice creams. Most any flavor you can think of, they have it."
<OOC> Firefly says, "A group of 'note takers and recorders of files' from Guild Wars 2."
<OOC> You say, "Ahh"
<OOC> Firefly says, "Always hush-hush and listening, taking notes...."
<OOC> Firefly says, "lol"
<OOC> Nightshade has enough on all of you to bury you forever BI
<OOC> Firefly grins.
Mimic flashes Nightshade a grin, a genuine one that is also passed to Firefly along with an understanding nod. "Simple doesn't mean insufficient or imperfect. Sometimes simple is... just right. Complicated things are complicated. Easy to break." She rises up off the bench to her hooves so she can better settle her cloak. "Nothing *is* perfect, but, I think Canterlot is doing just fine. At least to my eyes."
"Uh.. I don't make the rules." Medley says as she looks over to Barnstormer curiously. "Perhaps each ticket and dinner had a price and after so many sold the charity goal was met?" With a flick of her ears, she looks back to Firefly. "You'd want to .. hang out and get ice cream, with me?"
Barnstormer chuckles, "It's something like that, Med. Plus, they're kind of expensive, especially for what you get. You're 'paying for the company' my dad says." She sighs and rolls her eyes. "It's... really sort of hoity toity. Too much for my tastes really."
Nightshade doesn't turn to look at Firefly, having also become accustomed to this highly useful ability of hers. She focuses instead on Mimic, hearing her words and acknowledging the wisdom in them. "Ah, yes. Sadly, we have much experience with the breaking. I thank you for seeing our city in a positive light." She steps back to give Mimic space, blinking as she remembers that she's forgotten to properly introduce herself. How very unlike her. "I am Nightshade, an official of the royal court in Canterlot. Forgive me for my late introduction." She bows respectfully.
Firefly laughs "Medley, when have you ever NOT hung around with me? You were always there, 'slow down' or 'watch out' and the likes." grinning to Barnstormer. "A musical friendly concience, that's what she is." teasing, looking down to Barmstormer while Night and Mimic talk over magic...somethings or others. "So, what DO you like then?"
"It's okay, believe me." Mimic says to Nightshade with a smile. "When I'm not dodging crowds of ponies staring at me I'm usually too busy deflecting uncomfortable questions as opposed to introductions. I've been here long enough now through to not feel so awkward with the crowds. It'd been.... well, I don't ever remember being around a lot of ponies even before..." She trails off, shaking her head as she lets out a breath. "I apologize. I don't want to hold you up from your friends, Miss Nightshade."
"Well, I mean you did kinda.. become this big powerful squire of Luna's and we.. kinda don't live together anymore and... now we don't hang out so much." Medley scuffs her hoof against the ground. "It's not a big deal, I understand you're super important now so when we do hang out it's good enough for me." Smiling weakly, she says, "But, we can get ice cream if you want."
Barnstormer gives Medley a brief sidelong look, then to Firefly. "Hmm, I'm starting to think maybe you two need to hang out more than I'm needed around," She says with a chuckle. "Catching up on ... whatnots." She drops her goggles over her eyes and makes a soft sound, "What? Me? I don't know, I like gatherings, just not when it's about money is all. Buuuut anyways..."
"They are not my friends, and Lady Firefly is my superior," says Nightshade, her nuanced expression showing no hint of disturbance. "I suppose, in a way, I can certainly understand your sentiment in this regard. I am...wont to dwell in solitude."
Firefly grins. "Oh Medley, its mostly just a name...smoke and mirrors to maintain an image....its nothing like fightning dragons....though being the only Squire in existance here kinda feels cool, and do I love wearing the armor when I DO get to do something useful." then grins. "And sometimes its fun to scare the snooty ones." then smiles. "And it is NOT a desk job." nodding matter of factly, then grins to Barnstormer. "So you're sire is one of the..what was it...oh yes, 'Wonderbolts'?"
"Yeah, but, you've kinda changed also since butterfly island. You're like.. I don't know.. it's hard to explain. You're just bigger than what you used to be and sometimes I wonder if the old rainbow sliding Firefly that I grew up with is still in there somewhere." Medley rubs the back of her neck. Shuffling some on her hooves, she lets out a soft breath. "I guess I just miss the old days."
Mimic tips back her ears as she regards Nightshade, but there's a sadness in her expression that carries the weight of something very old and all too fresh despite it. "Some ponies seem destined to be alone regardless of how much they want or try to make it otherwise. Some find it alright, I suppose, others are just used to it. ...they seem like they could be good ponies to be friends with, though."
"Mm? My Sire? Really?" Stormie quirks a brow a moment, "Yeah, my dad's a Wonderbolt. Or, use to be. He's retired now, though still doesall the socially stuff." She shrugs and flaps her wings a bit, taking her a little higher, "You know, I should probably just head out. You two should talk. Medley, I think you need to reconnect with your friend," she says with a sage nod."
"I see, I see," Nightshade replies, nodding as Mimic speaks. "An interesting philosophy, though I dare say that one can never be too certain about one's lot without endeavour. You seem to be the sort who has initiative enough, however. After all, you are here in Equestria. You study at the university, I presume?"
Firefly looks at herself a moment. "Yeah, Luna decided to beef me up some after almost getting killed....said it didn't look right to have a Squire getting all dead on her." giggling. "And I do still play with rainbows, just not in public...and have been toying with moonbeam ones now." then grins to Barnstormer. "You're certainly the most unusual filly I've met, but nice to have met you. With such insight I dare say you're cutie mark may well be a small sofa with a quill and pad."
Mimic tips her head to Nightshade with the return of a soft smile as she glances back to the university. "I do, yes. I'm studying magic that the Empire lost track of over the years - what was stolen, destroyed, or just never learned. As the only... well, the Crystal Princess and her Consort though it would be a good job for me and my talents at memory. I do need to be making my report back to her, actually, so... I'm afraid I must be going."
