Good evening, Ladies and gentlecolts! This, is an erm...odd little topic I've decided to start in lieu of Rainbow Dash's wonderful little essay on Pegasi. I've been thinking about the world in my own little head cannon, and decided I would share it all with you!
Now, first of all, Pegasi. (Oh, don't worry, darlings, I shall do all of the races.)
Pegasi are radical in nature. They are naturally free spirits, and Pegasi are creatures of passion, emotion, movement, and energy.
They are 'raw' in so far as emotions go; feeling the heights of each and the lowest of them with very little in between- extremes, as it were.
As an example: Fluttershy is very passionate about animals, but she's quiet. She's too quiet but emotions oft get the better of her and clouds judgement. (When the Princess's pet bird was 'sick' or she took assertiveness lessions) Rainbow Dash is too brash, as is Lightning Dust and SpitFire. All of them highly emotional. The idea of being able to take flight, and soar is like a passionate dream so many creatures have, and Pegasi able to achieve this tend to embody it.
To that end, they are naturally talented acrobats and athletes. And often display some sense of Pegasus Pride. (Rainbow Dash is a prime example of this )
As creatures of the air, and freedom, Pegasi all have a bit of ... skittishness when being on the ground. It's a bit of an uncomfortable sensation, like, a little prickle in the wings that never really goes away until you're back in the sky- where you belong. To that extent, all Pegasi suffer from claustrophobia, to some degree or another. It's been widdled down from generations, but it still exists in most. They'd rather be outside than inside. (Take Rainbow Dash's immense home, for example.)
This 'Pegasi Pride' tends to be in all Pegasi, keeping them constantly competing in competitions; for either the sake of betting themselves, the joy of competition itself, or trying to -beat- somepony, they have a drive- an urge- a calling, if you will, to rise up to challenges.
Pegasi have nine senses. Touch, Taste, Hearing, Sight, and Smell, aside, they also possess:
A sense of direction, instinctively knowing north, south, east and west, up and down, (As birds automatically know to fly 'south' for the winter, and it adds an extra layer on the joke, why 'Ditzy Doo' took the birds in the wrong direction)
A sense of Elevation. Pegasi instinctively know how far or close they are to the ground when in flight.
A sense of temperature and pressure. A bit like a mosquito, Pegasi can feel drops and dips in temperature, which was probably evolved from so many generations of weather working. The dip in pressure and temperature would allow for better control of storms and weather.
A sense of sonar and echolocation. Basically, a heightened sense of touch from feathers to feel the currents of the wind around them. so much that it's a bit like echo location in the air. Feeling the sensation of 'still' air compared to 'moving' air which would be incredibly important so high up, and moving at incredible speeds.
Now, in so far as fighting goes, in times of war, and the like, Pegasi have a particular hard time working together. They make for expert combatants, in one on one combat, however.
Pegasi have the versatility for air combat, striking hard, and fast. Get the job done in one. They rarely work well in groups, preferring 'solo' missions or situations where they needn't relay on someone else. They have a hard time following 'orders' and prefer a basic concept to distinct individual rules. "Destroy the bunker. I don't care how, just get it done." as opposed to "Go to Sector A do x,y,z, do not engage, head to sector B, do X, y, Z, etc etc.
They are VERY adapt at improvising, and natural instincts are generally enough to get them through missions.
Pegasi are the solo secret agents. The one pony army. The solid snakes of the ponyverse. Send Lightning Dust in. Destroy enemy armaments. Go. And in the morning, Lightning is standing there, burned and singed, but saluting, and triumphant.
Inso far as racial relationships tend to go, Pegasi are head strong and stubborn. They need someone to compete with, and Who else, but other pegasi could hope to stand a chance! They need each other, and Pegasi tend to keep each other in 'check' either via keeping them in shape and athletic to compete, or by reminding them of moral values when tempers flare too high. And Most Pegasi have a temper of sorts (Fluttershy the exception to the rul- www.youtube.com/watch?v=rwp60eYuie0- Nevermind)
Pegasi in a nutshell-
