Hello, my darling little ponies! THIS time, in "Rarity's World" I shall explain what my little head cannon tells me about Unicorns!
Yes, yes, Unicorns, indeed! Now then:
Unicorns, Unicorns, Unicorns...lets see.....where to begin...
Unicorns are your painters. Your artists, and story tellers, song writers and your philosophers. A society of 'knowledge' that builds on itself, and spirals around the concept of creativity. They like to create and capture emotions while Pegasi are just raw emotion.
They have their high society but it's all tingling with a sense of arrogance. The ability to use magic makes them 'the best' and they're too 'nice' to go about flaunting it in the faces of the 'lesser' races. Especially if the lesser races aren't smart enough to realize it. They're not going to get their hooves dirty to grow and plant food, they've others to do that -for- them. They're magical, gosh darn it!
To that end, Magic is something difficult to learn, and even more so, difficult to master. Every unicorn has a desire to learn, it's part of who they are- in their blood, something they're born to do, and there's a silent, but persistent urge to display what I can learn- like a talent show where everybody is trying to out do one and other. Basically, Unicorn society is like the popular kids at high school.
Unicorns have a...odd sort of connection to one and other, which is a trifle difficult to explain. Unicorns are more interested in the bond through creation while at the same time, trying to out do one and other. But they need one and other in the first place, to out do them!
"That's spectacular"
"Well that's a wonderful drawing!"
"Almost as good as MY drawing skills!"
"Almost?"
"Oh, you're getting there."
They want someone to collaborate with, someone to keep close, but not 'too' close. They get on each others nerves.
But you can't argue with their creative aspects. It's part of their culture! As an example, the Flim Flam Brothers built a marvelous train, and sped around from town to town in it! Every unicorn wants to show off, and every unicorn wants to be accepted. Every unicorn wants to feel like their the 'best' and they've got a talent that makes them unique. It's not 'wrong' it's just a different view point.
As far as sensory input goes, Unicorns have a total of six senses.
Aside from the typical five, Unicorns also have a sense of 'magic.'
Like the ability to sense the presence of magic things. A 'tingle' if you will- the ebb and flow of magic in the universe flows through them, and as such they're certainly effected by it. Consider it a bit like 'The Force' if you will, for Star Wars fans. They can manipulate magic for complex tasks, but they've always got a tingle of it. Twilight's Library has quite the magic sensory overload when entering for the first time, a sense of "WOW, HEAD RUSH...g, gimmie a second..." if you are a unicorn.
Now, in so far as Unicorns in times of War and fighting?
Unicorns are...frail creatures. not really cut out for 'fighting' as such. Magic not withstanding, they aren't particularly good at combat, and would much rather 'talk' than fight. Unicorn 'war' is largely made up of politics, more politics, talking about politics, and mostly politics. With some red tape thrown in to gunk everything up and make ponies tear their manes out.
However, Unicorns also excel at...misdirection, slight of hand, and assassination. Oh, yes, they're not silly. If they can decide on the most effective way to eliminate an opposing threat, it will most certainly be eliminated. They don't fight, no. They will deliberate, for a great deal of time- buying time, while they casually barricade the enemies in their own homes, set fire during the night, and return to trying to figure out what to do and find a 'peaceful' solution. Unicorns are social rouges. They're talkers, and charmers, and are exceedingly proficient when it comes to cunning and strategy. There isn't any point to 'combat' if you can talk your opponents into joining your side.
Unicorns are dreadfully complex, and like to 'brag' in the 'nicest' ways possible. They are creatures whom flaunt their intelligence almost like hipsters and delight in high 'culture'
