On Wednesday, July 10th, I hosted a modest poetry contest in Cherry Blossom's garden in honor of the beauty of the falling blossoms. Participants were challenged to create nature-inspired poems in four forms: the haiku, trimerick, cinquain, and lento. Their creations (together with my examples) follow below. I've left the entries anonymous, but Fluttershy was the eventual victor, followed by Winter Chill. Thanks to EconomistBrony and Merryweather for helping me judge. =)
Haiku:
HAIKU #1 (winner)
My cherry bomber
knocks all the ponies down flat
bunnies can't deny
HAIKU #2
Cherry Blossoms
With the afternoon sun in the sky.
Truely such a sight.
HAIKU #3
Cherry Blossoms Fall.
Derpy Sits Beneath Them All.
Derpy is so cute.
Trimericks:
MUFFIN JUICE
So delicious muffin
fleck with thick berries
moist as a springcreek
wrap-ped with love.
-------------
Fleck with thick berries
flavor is deep pack
like mining golds.
-------------
Moist as a springcreek
hover by insect
give blood, not take.
-------------
Wrap-ped with love
paper and ridgewax
Promising joy.
TRIMERICK #1 (winner)
The clouds give way to a bright and sunny day.
The colts and fillies all run about and play.
The day gave warmth to our hearts.
The ice had all melted away.
-------------
The colts and fillies all run about and play.
The parents they sat there, content with the peace.
The occasional song of a bird in the air.
-------------
The day gave warmth to our hearts.
As the day reached it's end.
The colts and fillies were all getting ready for another summer day.
-------------
The ice had all melted away.
The snowy season not yet here.
That season was not until next year
TRIMERICK #2
The afternoon is a loving time
Sunlight shimmers on the water
Ponies trot down streetpaths
The birds sing their songs to flatter
--------------------------------------
Sunlight shimmers on the water
The lake glistens with its rays
And brings home boats to its bays
--------------------------------------
Ponies trot down the streetpaths
Flowers are given to a lover
Affection true will rightly show
--------------------------------------
The birds sing their songs to flatter
Chirping begets the nesting time
Colors flow from a musical rhyme
TRIMERICK #3
I can still recall
those summer days
when we were young and
free of care,
---------
Those summer days
that seemed to last
forever and a day,
---------
When we were young and
life was fun
we dared to dream,
------------
Free of care
is really where
I do so long to be.
Cinquains:
DERPY'S CINQUAIN
Bubble
Floating upward
Air in the middle of
So much love that it deserves hugs.
...It Popped!!
CINQUAIN #1 (winner)
Ponies
falling over
curse the name of the force
that brings us all low in the end:
GRAVTY.
CINQUAIN #2
Blazing;
Wild desert heat,
Beware the angry sun, and
They say real is brown, but I just
want green
CINQUAIN #3
Bugs.
Crawling about.
So many legs and so many eyes.
Disgusting bugs.
CINQUAIN #4
That rain
It ruins it
I can't walk or relax
There's nothing to do when it rains
Stuck home
Lentos:
A LENTO ABOUT LENTOS (by the form's creator)
Composed in winter of Two Thousand Five,
Proposed by my dreams, this entire theme,
Exposed now for all to write and have fun,
Supposed to be easy though it doesn't seem.
----------------
Two verses of four lines each you will write,
Do rhyme the beginning word in every line,
Pursue to keep last rhymes in line 2 and 4,
Chew your brain a little, you'll do just fine!
DERPY'S WINTER LENTO
Smush down a winter puddle's ice!
Sploosh! and your hoof go through.
Foosh! and the water flow downhill
Whoosh! as the wind turns blue!
--------------------
Attack all the snow crusts by the path
Backtrack to stomp them all!
Crack! goes the sound of hoofly wrath;
Smack down the icy wall.
LENTO #1
Multiplex shows neon signs
Sure to vex the theatergoer
Big T. Rex composes verses
Deeply affects rats in the sewer
--------------------
Nevermind the forlorn cries
Far behind the winning runner;
Colorblind the pony who
is an unkind and fearful punner
LENTO #2 (winner)
Comforting, the boughs spread wide
Buffering against the windy tide
Something about it stirs inside
Wondering while the roots twist through my mind
--------------------
Hosts all kinds of creatures big and small
Snow gathers up above and drops
Though I may not really want to be one
Oh, and I could never climb high enough to reach the top
