Hello my little ponies! Tis I, Rarity, a pony whom does NOT fold, and plays her cards, regardless if the town is too big and cold!
Tis been quite a while and I've had a bit of a vacation from writing my lectures, but now I'm BACK and have I got a lecture for YOU.
But, darlings, before I get into this, there is something I simply MUST Address: These views discussed below are simply my own opinions and not such that of Equestira Muck’s Staff, or the hard working wizards that run our little corner of the web!
Now, on to our topic at hoof: Timely Pose
Timely pose is that little thing that keeps the RP flowing smoothly. Not ALL of us are writers, of course, and someponies need to take a little bit of time to compose their thoughts before pressing that enter key. However...there are some circumstances lately, I've noticed where somepony happens to take five...ten...fifteen, EVEN TWENTY MINUTES between your pose, and their own. UNACCEPTABLE.
Now, of course, things happen. RL has a tendency to crop up at the worst possible times, and often there is scant you can do about it! You CAN however, let the other ponies in the RP with you KNOW there's something going on, so they might pose around you, or perhaps, be kind enough, and patient enough, to wait. If you're busy helping your grandmother, if you're watching the timer on a pizza, if your taking the dog out...Whatever it is, be kind enough to let your pose partners KNOW you might be away for a little bit. Often a simple BBS (Be back soon) Is what ponies use, but you could always go the extra step and give a TIME FRAME. BBS could be 5 minutes, or 10 minutes. There's a difference.
Now then, if you happen to just be a S-L-O-W typer; the type that might 'hunt and peck' as it were, that's just fine. Here is Rarity's suggestion, and a style she uses almost everyday: Type your pose before your partner. That is to say, have a good idea what you want your character to do in response to the situation BEFORE it happens. A tad confusing, I'm sure, but let me give you an example.
Rarity is working in her boutique, crafting a number of splendid and spectacular dresses when Derpy, our Dreamy Eyed Mare arrives with a stack of back order issues of Clothes Horse Weekly.
Derpy smile brightly. "Rarity! Am here! Am have magazines! Am have pretty scribble?" Derpy asks, flashing a notoriously lopsided smile towards the fashionista, holding out a clipboard and a quill.
NOW, that above is Derpys initial pose. She's setting up an action that Rarity, is to react to. But I'll have already WRITTEN a pose in turn, even though I don't know what Derpy was going to write. That is to say, a 'BASE' pose of my reaction, with a little bit of fine tuning, and tweeking to make it fit:
Base Pose:
Rarity gives a faint sigh; ears twitching at the sound of Derpy's voice in her boutique. Well hopefully this time there isn't a disaster about to happen- she just managed to get the place cleaned up from her LAST 'delivery'
Now, with that above being my BASE pose, I simply add a little bit to it, to fit it into Derpy's action, and turn it into a 'reaction.
Rarity gives a faint sigh; ears twitching at the sound of Derpy's voice in her boutique. Well hopefully this time there isn't a disaster about to happen- she just managed to get the place cleaned up from her LAST 'delivery' Oh? You've bought me an entire month's worth of backorder magazines....that I ordered....months ago. Thank you." Rarity says flatly with a heaving sigh, taking hold of the quill with her magic and scribbling her signature onto Derpy's clipboard.
As you can see, a lengthy pose like that, is cut down to half it's length by a little forethought and planning. Now, of course this is only the way -I- choose to pose, and you needn't follow it at all, the core concept, here, hopefully, that you take with you, is be mindful of how long you make your pose partners WAIT for your pose. The faster the better, after all, everypony wants a turn! (But don't feel rushed )
Till next time my darling little ponies!
