Goodness it's been a while, has it not? Greetings my little ponies! Tis I, Lady Rarity, who has lately been losing sleep, dreaming about things she could be, and praying hard (Not to mention counting stars.) Tonight, we have a lesson for you dealing with suspension. No, no, not the school yard kind, I mean Role Play Suspension!
But, darlings, before I get into this, theres something I simply MUST address: These views discussed below are simply my own opinions and not such that of Equestira Muck’s Staff, or the hard working wizards that run our little corner of the web!
Now then, if you've been on a muck before, (Or if you're terribly new) You'll want to note that even the simplest 'Role plays' have a tendency to go longer than expected. If it's an FC scene. (That is, a scene with featured characters, such as myself, or Applejack) You can expect things to get quite crowed, and go for quite some time. The problem with that, is RL sometimes crops up, and tugs you away from your fantasy ponies! What is one to do? The answer, darling; is suspension.
Suspending an RP allows all participants to take a breather, and focus on other activities for a while. Writing lengthy poses can take quite a lot out of someone's concentration and lead to fatigue. In order to suspend one's RP, first, it's customary to ask if it's alright to take a break here? After all, many of us live in different time zones. What might be 'early' for you, could very well be very VERY late for somepony else! If all participants agree (And most likely they will) make sure someone has a record of at least the last pose made, so you may start off again from that position. (Optional, of course, you very well just decide to make it up as you go along from whatever point you can remember last. )
But once you've saved your final pose, tuck it away somewhere safe and bring it out for your continuing your adventure next! Many muck clients have log saving features which will automatically record every thing written down for ease of use.
The NEXT part of suspension, is a little bit more tricky. This is a different note than the suspension above. Let us say, Lady Rarity is in the middle of a deep RP, involving cocktail shrimp, manehatten, and Twilight going on a bender. We quit for the middle of the day, and later that night, Rarity gets wrapped up in another RP in Ponyville.
But...but she was just in Manehatten! How can that make sense?!
Easy answer: It doesn't. It's a cartoon. Deal with it.
Other answer: if you are a stickler for that sort of thing (as some players are, tis important to keep a timeline if you're the sort to collect artifacts or items, or I.C. knowledge) you may consider using suspension in so far as time. Rarity is in two RPs at once, One in manehatten, and one in Ponyville. One can claim this RP is earlier in the day, BEFORE Rarity slipped off to Manehatten. Mind you this is a personal little touch if you need to explain to another player why you're in an RP in Ponyville, when they last saw you Rping in Manehatten with them.
Other other answer: I've stopped making sense entirely because it's 6:02 in the morning and I can't sleep.
Thats all for now my little ponies! Have fun, and have a happy nondenominational wintertime celebration!
