PLACES:
The Cave of Night: A cavern complex hidden under the Everfree Mountains. Filled with life magic. Permanently night time, instead of just dark. Filled with plants unknown to the surface world, which crumble to ash at the touch of sunlight. There's a tunnel in Nettleglum's back yard leading there.
Tartarus: A huge cavern in the shape of an underground rift canyon. Walls are lined with walkways and prison cells. Lots of bridges, with monsters imprisoned on some of them. The walls are magic-proof, and the only entrance is one heavily guarded tunnel.
HISTORICAL PONIES:
Drakul the Blood Pony: In the running for history's least friendly pony and most powerful necromancer and sanguimancer. Originally died a colt, but so good at necromancy he keeps finding ways to come back. Had a fortress under the stinking, cursed swamps of Detrot. Current status, ashes baked into a slab of lead while Princess Luna tries to find a way to destroy his soul. Just not a nice pony at all.
Horizon: One of Luna's old boyfriends and the only unicorn mage in recorded history to figure out the spell to raise the moon. Responsible for the Night of Two Moons. Current status: Insane (in a friendly way), ancient but still alive, imprisoned in Tartarus to stop him from hurting himself and others by accident.
Pollyapple: Celestia's last daughter (Celly wasn't nearly as colt-crazy as Luna). Earth pony. Light blue coat, blonde mane and tail. Sun cutey mark with a smiley face. Very, very friendly. Very, very dim. Current status: Passed away of old age a thousand years ago.
Lullabye Moon: Luna's second-to-last daughter, and last surviving. Sapphire colored unicorn. Wand and crescent moon cutey mark. Powerful mage, but not nearly as powerful as she thought. Not evil, but her ego caused a lot of trouble. Grandmother of Prince Blueblood. Current status: Lived for centuries after Luna's banishment, but still long gone.
Evening: Luna's daughter by Starswirl, before he grew that ridiculous beard. Yes, Luna got around and had a thing for great wizards. Pale purple hide. Unrecorded cutey mark. Published a lot of magical research papers under her father's name.
Midnight Dream: Luna's last daughter, shortly before the banishment. Leader of the Sisterhood of Wings. Current status: Died young, and removed from history books.
The Unity: An organization of ponies in the years just before Luna's banishment. Believed in unifying earth ponies, pegasi, and unicorns into one race. Believed it was unethical to experiment on anyone but themselves. Generally crazy, but in a friendly way. Current status: The movement didn't last long, but who knows what they left in Equestria's gene pool?
Sisyphus: A unicorn stallion who found a spell to grant himself immortality without ascending as a princess. The princesses decided this was hubris, and locked him in Tartarus. If he can roll a boulder out the gates, he's a free pony. Probably the nicest guy in Tartarus. Current status: Sure he's going to make it this time.
Broken Flint: Luna's first boyfriend. Earth pony. Lived in the years immediately after Discord's reign. Recorded only in a few very old pictograms. Believed to have been a very poor miner.
Daedalus: Inventor and scientist. Well-meaning, but way too fond of building war machines. Appearance unknown, especially since he should have died millenia ago. Current status: Imprisoned in Tartarus, in a workshop at the center of a labyrinth. The labyrinth's purpose is to keep his war machines from getting out before they destroy each other.
MONSTERS:
The Titans: A family of buffalo-sized ponies. Each one is almost, but not quite, princess-level powerful. Immortal in a very serious 'Did you really recover from being imprisoned in molten lava?' sense. Arrogant to the point of megalomania, believing themselves the true rulers, creators, and gods of ponykind. Selfish, mean, destructive, and with a serious hate-on for the princesses. So hard to kill, the princesses imprisoned them in Tartarus because it was easier. Current status: Tartarus's maximum security inmates, each locked up in an excessive way. Cronus is under a diamond dome chained to iron spikes driven through his horn. Tethis is locked in a pool of lava. Atlas is crushed under Equestria's largest feaking stone. And so on. Prometheus is actually out by the entrance, imprisoned by his own choice to help keep his evil family from escaping.
Flesh Foals: Creatures resembling pre-cutey mark pegasi with sharp teeth. Actually fungi who imitate animal life closely. Rabidly carnivorous, and almost mindless. Thanks to Nettleglum and Fluttershy's efforts, some are now enrolled in the Nimbus Scouts, too busy trying to sell cookies to devour prey. Current Status: Running amok in Tartarus, but unable to get out. No, Nettleglum, you may NOT have any cuttings.
The Blank: Incarnate magical spell, a curse that looks like a pre-cutey mark foal. Pure white, including eyes. Animal level intelligence, acts friendly. If it touches any foal whose cutey mark has not yet emerged, it eats their cutey mark, leaving them bereft of destiny or special talent. Immune to magic, indestructible, but with no special strength or magic of its own. It is not immortal because it is not technically alive. Current Status: Wandering the lower reaches of Tartarus.
Malchior: A prince of dragons millenia ago. Black scales. Briefly engaged to Luna in a political marriage. Tried to assassinate her and Celestia at the wedding. She didn't take it well. Current Status: Imprisoned in Tartarus
Satyrs: Intelligent deer, usually with silver coats. Beautiful and graceful. Friendly, playful, and have trouble grasping good and evil as concepts. Once imprisoned for sanguimancy, recent generations have renounced that practice for the only slightly less troublesome practice of hypnotic dances. Current Status: Wandering free in Tartarus, and trying to avoid the other inmates.
Scylla and Charybdis: Monsters guarding the inner gate of Tartarus. Very friendly unless you're an escaping inmate. Charybdis is a globe of water, spinning in a vortex and changing size constantly. Scylla is an otherwise beautiful yellow ponypede with three pairs of legs replaced by fanged pony heads. Charybdis's sentience is questionable. Scylla is incapable of intelligible speech, but is almost of pony intelligence. She has a crush on Scope.
Will-O-Wisps: Nocturnal balls of light, rare and shy, found almost exclusively in the wilds away from pony habitation. Spirits of living magic, they have no physical presence, but can be touched by earth ponies. Possessed of a perfect sense of direction, will guide lost ponies to that pony's home. Otherwise, just float around. Sentience questionable. Current Status: Rare, but under Luna's orders to seek out lost ponies for rescue.
Wumpus: Elephant-sized monster. Claws, fangs, clumsy, theoretically very dangerous. Only non-ponies with cutey marks, and all the same mark. Appearance of the mark is unknown. Appearance of Wumpus is unknown. Their special talent is to never, ever, be where anypony is looking. They are always in the next room, or behind that hill. A side effect of this talent is that they are never close enough to harm anypony. They do tend to break stuff. Current Status: Who knows?
Diamond Dancer: A pegasus foal, off-white with grey spots. Cutie mark of a falling star (currently with actual small star grafted on). Afflicted with a wasting disease that prevents her from feeling pain, has combined with her special talent of surviving falls from space to render her skin diamond hard, and her body close to impervious. Maybe not indestructible, but the next best thing. Eyes light up like flashlights if she whacks her head hard enough. Dreams of bagels. Naturalists believe that calling this creature a 'pony' is stretching the definition to the breaking point. Current Status: Running another weird errand for Princess Luna.
ARTIFACTS:
The Casket of Drakul the Blood Pony: Don't open that.
The Very Annoying Box(es): Don't open that. Actually very hard to open, puzzle boxes containing pocket spaces where the princesses put things that don't try to escape but should not be let out. Examples include a portal to Hate, and Princess Luna's old gym socks. Look vaguely like Rubix Cubes, but the pieces aren't the same shape.
Lullabye Moon's Baby Wand: Lullabye Moon's baby toys in general are still preserved in the artifact vaults. They are all impregnated with her powerful magic. The wand, intended to focus her first clumsy spells, has reversed and now gives the wielder power, but spells cast with it are hard to direct and go wrong most of the time.
Lullabye Moon's Cloak: A purple cape covered in glittering stars, Luna made it for her daughter, promising her the power to reorder the stars in Heaven. Actually just lets a pony talk to constellations, but it's the same thing, right?
Pollyapple's Bubble: A pony-sized bubble that can be climbed in and rolled around. Bounces off things in a soft way that causes reduced destruction.
The Rock of Convenience: A hoof-sized rock. Its owner will always find it close at hoof if they need a rock. Powerful magic is not always spectacular or weapony.
Get Out Of Falling To Your Death Free Card: These are great. You hit the ground, and bounce around unharmed. One use each.
EVENTS:
Night of Two Moons: Tragic disaster. A unicorn named Horizon attempted to raise the moon with magic. Instead raised a second moon. Earthquakes and lunacy followed. Together, Luna and Celestia prevented a tsunami-like tide from destroying Equestria until the sun could be raised early.

Being an Excerpt from the Proceedings of the Royal Geographical Society concerning the Affairs of the Pegasi
Great Houses: Unlike the rest of Equestrian feudal society, pegasi nobles lack estates or fiefs, for the simple reason that is no land to be had on pegasus cloud-dwellings. Instead, a system of timocracy is in place; a pegasus house is greater or lesser for the degree of honour and prestige it possesses. Such honour is most commonly gained through service to the State, in whatever form, though in the old times martial service was the norm. A few houses are of such prominence to merit individual attention.
The Bellerophoi: Well-storied by tales of great warrior ancestors, this house persists in this tradition by being one of the most vocal advocates of a comprehensive Theme system. They are most influential amidst the Air Cavalry and the Royal Mail, through their intransigent traditionalism has fostered much rivalry. Motto: "Our Shields Stand Resolute."
The Daedaloi: Matchless innovators and scholars, the Daedaloi are the single largest patron house of the Cloudsdale Comprehensive Education System. Members are prominent in the Weather Council and in the Academy. Several Daedaloi are attested to have contributed to the creation of many key technological advances. Motto: "With Watchful Eyes."
The Skyrosoi: One of the oldest houses of nobility, dating to before Unification. By all accounts they are one of the most prestigious as well, having supplied several ephors, strategoi, and Crown servants. They are very close to the monarchy in Canterlot, but unfortunately have fallen into hard times due to political manoeuvring. Motto: "Faithful Forever."
On the Local Weather Patrols: The most familiar encounter that the average pony has with the pegasus State is the Weather Patrol. The singular Weather Patroller in a pony's locality is actually the most visible technician of a vast and complex technical and administrative system. Formally known as the Weather Captain, the Patroller is often assisted by up to three Weather Lieutenants. He and the Lieutenants are the only permanent members of the Patrol; during exceptional circumstances the Captain has the authority to deputize almost the entire population of pegasi in his jurisdiction. More commonly, volunteers train as reservists and are recalled during key events such as Winter Wrap-Up.

So, uh, I just wanted to say something.
Some of you might remember reading in the newspapers about a year ago that the laboratory wing of Celestia's School for Gifted Unicorns burned down. Nopony was hurt, and while nopony's really sure what caused it, the investigators think it was caused by a /freak accident/ when some poorly stored potion ingredient stuff in a dusty cobwebby store-room just happened to catch on fire. For no reason.
I just wanted to say that this was totally a freak accident, and totally had nothing at all to do with me.
At all.

ARTIFACTS:
"Wish-I-May-Wish-I-Might Star" Star granted to Diamond Dancer after successfully completing her first mission to reignite a fallen star. Precisely 1% of a star, a smallish sized rock has been removed and made into a necklace for Diamond Dancer. The star grants wishes to it's holder, often resulting in calamity and bodily harm. The star is currently affixed to Diamond Dancer's Cutie Mark, which glows in reaction to her various mood swings. Please don't wish on Diamond's butt. Only bad things can happen from then on.
