Hello my little ponies! Tis I, Rarity, The toast of the town, the girl on the go, the belle of the ball and the star of the show! Today, we have an extra special class today in another addition of The Fine Art of Role Play! Tonight's lesson is short and sweet, since I have too many dresses to make, and not enough time to make them. What is tonight's lesson? Pose Length darling. Pose length.
But, darlings, before I get into this, theres something I simply MUST address: These views discussed below are simply my own opinions and not such that of Equestira Muck’s Staff, or the hard working wizards that run our little corner of the web!
Now, then Pose Length, my dear ponies, is the number of lines you type in each pose. There are three different types (Four really) of poses. One liners, Short pose, long pose, and the buffer breakers that everybody hates! But I'm getting ahead of myself darling, let me state one thing very very VERY clearly, before we continue.
(And my dear friend Pinkie has supplied me with additional bold print, exclamation points, and other grammatical nuances that shall help me get my point across! Ahem.)
THERE IS NO WRONG WAY TO POSE! THERE IS ABSOLUTELY NO WRONG WAY TO POSE IN OUR GAME. SHORT POSE, LONG POSE, BUFFER BREAKERS, ONE LINE POSES, PARAGRAPHS, SENTENCE FRAGMENTS, OR SPOOFS, YOU ARE ROLE PLAYING WITH US, AND WE LOVE TO HAVE YOU. THE MORE THE MERRIER, AND IF ANYPONY, -ANYPONY- TELLS YOU, THAT YOUR POSE STYLE IS WRONG, THEY. ARE. MISTAKEN!!!
Whew! Now then, as I was saying; I assure you, there is no wrong way to pose with us! And in addition, I should like to take this time right now to say that if I have every EVER made any pony reading this, feel like they were inferior to me due to my poses, I extend my deepest apologies!
Not all of us are writers dear. Not all of us want to be, not all of us can be, and not all of us should be! I just happen to love writing long and lengthy poses! It's just the way I express myself! I know for a fact that my dear friend Pinkie favors the short pose, and that is just FINE! You can't go wrong either way, and in some cases, one may be better than the other, but there really is no wrong way to pose!
Now then, some examples of each different type of pose! Below is the long pose style, which is popular with pros and cons all of it's own. The long pose is usually six to ten lines of text long, and deals with extensive information regarding the situation, character or event taking place. The cons of this particular style sometimes is that long pose is TOO long, and it may hamper other characters. You see, some ponies may feel the need to write in long pose when everybody ELSE is doing so! (which, I must point out, is a terrible habit- you pose to the style that suits you) In addition, it also takes longer to form long pose and some times leaves ponies struggling to 'keep up' as it were.
I'm sure no pony would object to using a few lines of dialog from the solstice RP to provide examples here. (If you'd like to read our exploits go here, equestriamuck.proboards.com/index.cgi?board=logs&action=display&thread=59 ) Here's one of Derpy's poses, that depicts long pose:
Derpy's mane and feathers flutter in the coolness of Luna's words as surely as were they a winter breeze...and is that a breeze whipping through now? She looks down at her daughter with some flavor of surprise, and then spares a brief moment for Diamond Dancer behind her. This worries her. Dinky, however, is not apparently worried. "So you're not evil," the filly says at a conversational level, almost scoffingly. "That's good. I was worried you might be insane, seeing as how they say you were insane and THEN you spent a thousand years with nothing at all to do. So I guess it just drove you right around the bend and back into being healthy? That's good, that's good to know. Anyway, anything you want to know. Just ask. Not like I can leave now. What'd make me happy? No idea. No clue. You're the smart one." The young unicorn shuts her mouth then, impelled perhaps by the lingering sense that she's said too much. Her eyes no longer quite meet those of the Night Princess.
Long pose is just that. Long pose. If that's your posing style, there's nothing wrong with it in the slightest!
Now then, short pose is the same as long pose...only...you know...shorter! It's usually 3 to 5 lines of text and is generally quick and easy to write. As a draw back, you don't get nearly as much information as you might with long pose, but personally, darling, I prefer it over long pose when there are lots of different ponies in the room.
Here's yet, another example, from the Solstice RP. This is by Sevenseas and depicts a scene using Short Pose.
Seven_Seas thinks about Luna's question for a time. He hadn't been prepared to name a gift - it seemed a strange concept, really. "The thing I seek... isn't right to ask for. Not that I don't doubt your power, but, the treasure of the Mare of the Sea needs to be found - not given. Actually, I do have an idea. Do you have the power to help a pony who cannot fly gain wings - even for a short time?"
See? Quick, easy and only a few lines used to get your message across. Short pose. If that's your posing style, there's nothing wrong with it in the slightest!
One liner poses are usually meant as a joke or as a quick way to add to a previous pose with extra information you meant to add. Pinkie Pie is extremely good at these, and has a remarkable sense of humor! Although as a con, this generally doesn't offer all that much info on the scene and is generally hard to pose off of, the pro is that you can use it to tell everypony you're still actively participating in the scene, but have to go and take a pizza out of the oven or something! Below, is a short scene depicting Spike and Pinkie using a little one liner humor! Again, from the Solstice RP!
Pinkie_Pie prances vigirously in place, eagerly awaiting her turn.
Spike peers. "Pinkie, do you have to use the little filly's room?"
Just cute little quick poses. Generally most ponies use short pose or long pose, but you know what? Darling, if this is your pose style, you just go right ahead and use it! I insist! (But do try to abstain from using it too MUCH. Rapid one liner poses tend to be a little bit disruptive to a scene, which provides another con to this style. )
Lastly, there are the buffer breaks. These are poses that are SO long, it breaks the buffer of the world, and requires the pony to continue posing AFTER the world has said "OK, that's enough! STOP!" This is a very lengthy style that offers a great deal of information, but generally hard to accomplish and even harder to keep up with other ponies in the room! This is the longest pose style there is, and doesn't show up too often. Here's an example of a buffer breaker provided by Diamond_Dancer in the Solstice RP:
Diamond_Dancer's ears wilt slightly and her cheeks pinken. Slowly, she peeks up at Luna, and yelps when Pinkie butts her butt towards the large mare standing before her talking with Derpy. "W, wait! Wait! I'm not ready yet! I don't know what I want! Nightraven! Help!" She squeaks, trying to push back against Pinkie's insistence, but despite this, she's unable to stop Pinkie pushing her forward. "I, Uh...well AHEM. H, hello again, Princess. "She sputters quietly. "As you know, I should like to have a star. Dat would make ...AHEM. That...tha..Thaaat." She sputters, trying to sound the words out in her mouth. "That. Would make me happy. But Nightraven says I can't have one. And YOU said I can't have one. EVERYBODY says I -CAN'T- have a star! Well I WANT a star. I want a family, I want to taste dings again, and I want to stop losing my wings, stop losing my color and beat up Grace Gallops who took my favorite ribbon in first grade and NEVAH gave it back! "She snorts. "Well I'm gonna FIND Grace Gallops, and whoop her,I'm gonna talk to dat Zebra, and get her to fix my wings and my color and my taste buds! I've got Nightraven, and Rainbow, and Firefly, and Bard, and dare like my own family. I've got everyding I want except for da one ding I've been trying to get! You know what I -REALLY- Want most of all?! I WANT ponies to STOP telling me what I can't do, cause I, can, do, ANYDING. "She snorts. "I'm da pony dat broke all da records! I'm da pony dat ALMOST touched da stars! I'm da one dat got so close, yet so far! And I'm da one dat ain't given up!! So star! Please. I don't care if it's cold, or dead, or dyin. I'll to -put- da life in it! I don't care if Firefly is your squire! She took me in and looks after me. She's da best sistah any pony could ask for! And I don't care if I lose my wings cause Bard'll let me lay on his back and fly me around wherever I wanna go. But I refuse, I refuse, I -REFUSE- To let any pony, Even YOU tell me what I can, or can't do! "She snaps, pauses wide eyed and shies back immediately from the princess.
"But if dats to much trouble I'd REALLY appreciate it if you didn't vaporize me." She sighs, and squeezes her eyes shut- waiting for vaporization. "OR at least vaporize Pinkie! I hear she likes it!"
Now as you can see, this is a VERY lengthy pose that details a great deal of the character and what she has to say. It's a style that takes a little bit of time and effort and energy to write, and perhaps too much time if you're with a great number of ponies in the room. This is also a style that can be extremely disruptive if used in the wrong environment. You may want to use this style, sparingly, if at all, but if this is your posing style, there's nothing wrong with using it! (Again, with moderation. If your holding up the line or disrupting other players, please consider a different approach.)
Those are the pose styles I've come across so far, and I must say they are all simply quite smashing! Why? Because they are YOUR styles, and you're taking the time and energy to sit down and Role play with us. Sharing your character, your world, and your imagination with the citizens of ponyville, makes the world go around, and part of the magic of friendship! Remember, there is NOTHING wrong with short pose, Long pose, One liners or Buffer breakers. It's how you use them that counts, and we love you for all of your styles, regardless!
