Hello, Hello, Hello, and welcome, dearest ones, to another addition of The fine art of Roleplay etiquette; where Rainbow Dash ALWAYS dresses in style, we sing the sleep song before you go to bed, and Lord Smooze will awaken and bring about the end of days!! I am Rarity, your teacher for the evening and Tonight's topic?: Plot Point.
Now, before we begin, darling, there IS something I simply must address: the views depicted here are simply my own opinions and not such that of EquestiraMuck's staff, or the hard working Wizards that run our little corner of the web.
Now then, Plot points! No no no, not THOSE type plots, darling, but what drives your character! You point of existence. Your general reason for get up and GO. Now, I've come across a great number of ponies, recently, with absolutely no plot points. No reason for being. No purpose.
Thats unfortunate, because purpose drives RP. Take for example, Twilight Sparkle, who is studying lessons on Friendship. Simple, but it's why she's in Ponyville, and it drives her existence, but more importantly, it drives her RP!!
Now it's fine if you don't KNOW what your purpose is, or if you don't have a story associated towards said plot, but part of the fun, is coming up with on, and whats even MORE fun, is if other characters play into those plots.
Seven Seas had a map and was searching for a mystical treasure, somewhere around ponyville. A wonderful plot point!
Diamond Dancer was hoping to reach to the sky and get a star, and had several points try to help and stop her in this quest. Something we can all get behind: chasing a dream.
CMC and BRO are searching for their cutie marks! MAdcap and zany antics ensue!
All of these things, are simple, but it is a goal that your character can strive for! That for example, Inigo Montoya. He spent his entire life after one goal: Find the six fingered man whom killed his father. This was ONE goal but lead to incredible adventures! When he finished with that goal, he ended up becoming the Dread Pirate Roberts. Simple. But that will lead to many more outstanding adventures.
Now the big question, here, darling- is what is YOUR goal?
These can be simple things such as "Making the best banana cream pie in the world" (Where do I find the best ingredients, where can I find a chef to teach me some things, where can I find the recipe) to casting gypsy magic to summon a portal to try and bring your dead parents back to life!
If I may, I know that Diamond (Before she turned into a demon, or something) Was searching around for other ponies to help her collect her star from the sky. This is fantastic, as it opens up other ponies to be an integral part of what could grow into being a main story arc.
Seven Seas had the map, but other ponies ended up finding it, and helping decipher clues to the location of the secret treasure he was seeking. (Rarity in fact became a rival hoping to collect the treasure for herself, first).
Just the simplest goals can lead to massive adventures with just a little imagination and some good writing. What is YOUR plot point?
