So! I just finished watching Equestria Girls and I LOVED IT. I was expecting it to be so-so, but I loved it to pieces! The background cameos, the music was catchy, the story was really quite original, and the designs (in motion) are really nice! What did YOU think of Equestria Girls? It wasn't the worst possible thing, but it certainly wasn't anywhere near the driven work of passion and genius that it would have had to be to justify such a weird direction of departure for the franchise. I didn't see the story as original or logical, and if the music was catchy, why can't I remember any of it now?
The best thing, surprisingly, was Spikedog.
Sorry if feeling is hurt! But you ask-ed! 9.n

I gave it 4 out of 5. It was very good, the characters were identifiably themselves despite being bipedal and ape-like, and the interaction was all there. There were a couple of dropped plot threads (like Trixie's inexplicable cameo) but otherwise the story was OK. Could've definitely gone farther, though, as Derpy says, though I dunno if I'd go so far as call it 'illogical' (then again Derpy here didn't like "Lesson Zero" which is my third fav episode so there's that X3 ).

*Grin* "So...the sledge hammer would just...pass through the portal like anything else, right? Really, Twilight, wouldn't an egg head like you just...kinda, call the bluff. You KNOW this would happen. You KNOW this Twilight. You also remember how badly Discord ripped your entire world to pieces being a god and you were the only ones who could stop him. You know this.

Now, that being said, Twilight, PRINCESS TWILIGHT is willing to give up her entire homeland, because of a whim that she needs to SAVE this particular dimension.
1: If there is THIS dimension, than that means there are others. What makes THIS one so special if all these other dimensions are somewhat similar.
2: You're willing to give up your friends, family, Big Brother, the Princess, your parents, and the entire world that you know and love...because of five people you met for 2 1/2 days. THIS is the loyalty Princess Twilight has for Equestria, Ponies.
3: So, lets say she DOES decide to stay...in this high school...They are either juniors or seniors. So that means, more than likely, they shall be graduating. Soon. Twilight has no place to live. Twilight has a talking dog. Twilight has no change of clothes. That aside, Twilight, what will you do when they graduate and seek out different lives? Because that means you completely destoryed ponyville, left it up for Sombra, Chrysalis, or whatever jerko decides to sink it's claws into it...so you could save some Highschool kids from ...learning to adapt, and live in society.
Way to go, princess. Way to go.

I thought it was worth a watch, but I don't think I'd go out of my way to watch it again. I think it would have made a cute spin-off series had it been disconnected from FiM entirely. That being said... INCOMING SPOILERS!!!Sunset Shimmer's plan is the worst I've heard out of MLP thus far. She plans to take over the entirety of Equestria using roughly a few hundred brainwashed high school students. - Canterlot and the Crystal Empire are still heavily defended by trained armed guards and more than likely outnumbers this 'army'.
- It took Twilight a while to learn how to walk on two feet. Not many of these kids are going to know how to use any newfound wings or magic either, especially when mentally addled.
- Just how many of those kids does Sunset Shimmer think will fit through that portal at once? Two or three at the most even going in consistently? All Twilight has to to do is duck in there and warn Celestia to have something ready to block or intercept them.
- Sunset Shimmer has been in that other world for quite some time. It's doubtful she knows the full capabilities of Princess Cadence, Shining Armor, or the Crystal Empire.
- The fact that Twilight and the pseudo Mane 6 weren't controlled shows either Sunset Shimmer's TOTAL lack of oversight, arrogance, or that it's possible to resist if not be immune to its effects. Even if she were to mind control more ponies upon entering, what's stopping those she can't from targeting her and possibly just taking the darn crown off her head?

MOAR SPOILERS
I swore I wasn't going to comment here, but I'll keep myself on a short leash. Let me sum up my disgust this way:
Celestia: Okay, Twilight, tell no one what you are! They don't have magic in this world! Twilight: Got it! [one day later, at most] Twilight: Ohhai! I'm a magical princess pony from another world. Everyone: *totally cool with it* [cue Sailor Moon montage, school gets torn up] Everyone: *still totally cool with it, think Twilight is awesome, absolutely no apparent trauma over discovering there's magic, an alternate world/reality, their classmate is a ex-pony-turned-temporarily-demon-and-still-staying-there-like-nothing-happened, and ohyah... ponies freaking TALK* Twilight: *prances back to her world, leaving the school in ruins and a town with an existential crisis on their hands*
*cue frustrated scream*
No. I hated this movie. I hated it with the passion of a thousand suns. I expected better storytelling from these guys. This seemed like the kind of 'direct to DVD sequel' they make 5 years after the series ends, with none of the same writers or any real clue about the show, and the one thing I was afraid of happening when I first resisted even seeing the new MLP.

So Twilight should just let an entire dimension of people (not just the Other Five) alone to a terrible fate?
There are good reasons to dislike EG (Skyheart and Mimic give some), but I don't think this is one of them. Yes, you could argue that the human dimension wasn't really in great danger, but to say that Twi should just abandon them to their fate, regardless of the seriousness, is utter callousness. It's like when they started actually enforcing the Prime Directive on Star Trek.
With that said...
No one actually saw a pony, and Twi had to gather a lot of courage before she told her alternate friends (hence her surprise by how well they handle it). You have good points, though: they should have been way more shocked, but I fear any attempt to depict that "realistically" would've detracted from the "Friendship is Magic even in other dimensions" message that the movie was trying to push. That might be the sum of all the criticism, though: the writing was expressly targeted towards the Little Girls only and didn't have the same kind of fringe audience effect that the show had (maybe if they had a few more sequences where the girls have to work through their doubts about this whole magic thing).

So Twilight should just let an entire dimension of people (not just the Other Five) alone to a terrible fate? "Equestria will be without one of it's greatest means of defense." Nightmare moon, Discord, A number of other evil villains whom can only be beaten by the magic of harmony, are threatening to take over this dimension. Twilight has abandoned her role, to rescue high schoolers. Do you REMEMBER high school darling? Leave any entire dimension of people to a terrible fate. YOU MEAN LIKE SHE'S LEAVING EQUESTRIA ALONE TO A TERRIBLE FATE?! She's abandoning an Dimension one way or another, darling. There are good reasons to dislike EG (Skyheart and Mimic give some), but I don't think this is one of them. No, nobody saw a pony. They just saw an awkward high school girl who didn't go to any classes, suddenly grow wings, and start flying around, and one of the girls, turned into a fire demon and possessed all the other kids. No. Nobody saw a talking pony. They did see a talking dog, and five random kids grow ears and tails. But no talking ponies. That would be silly. Girl who tried to kill everyone, blew up the school, enslaved a race bent on starting a war, and transformed INTO A DEMON ...is welcome and accepted back into the school by everyone she just tried to hurl headlong into war. ...

I LOVE ALL THIS DISCUSSION AND MIMIC'S RARITY PIC. <3
Also, I did wonder (upon second viewing) SPOILERS SPOILERS SPOILERS SPOILERS SPOILERS SPOILERS SPOILERS SPOILERS SPOILERS SPOILERS SPOILERS SPOILERS SPOILERS SPOILERS SPOILERS SPOILERS SPOILERS SPOILERS SPOILERS SPOILERS SPOILERS SPOILERS SPOILERS SPOILERS SPOILERS SPOILERS SPOILERS SPOILERS SPOILERS SPOILERS SPOILERS SPOILERS SPOILERS SPOILERS SPOILERS
how the hell Sunset Shimmer thinks she can take over a world ruled by TWO PHYSICAL GODS, where a third of the population can use magic, and six members of the world managed to defeat TWO OTHER PHYSICAL GODS (Discord and Nightmare Moon)... with high school students. High school students that walk at a zombie's shuffle. WTF. Especially as they'd exit the portal STRAIGHT in front of THE TWO PHYSICAL GODS AND ANOTHER ALICORN. SUNSET SHIMMER, THOU ART A DUMBASS.
... but I still loved the movie.
