Attention ponies!!
Is strange seep afoot through the air. On Friday, interim princesses Applejack and Fluttershy came to Ponyville Square to make an announcement. The log will be posted, but to summarize... Princesses Celestia and Luna have decided to extend their vacation. All Fluttershy and Applejack know is that what they're doing has something to do with pizza, far away. Are they relishing time spent with each other and out of the public eye? Are they discovering themselves anew, as immortal ponies are perhaps wont to do intermittently? Are they considering and reconsidering their futures, or trying to recreate a past they never knew?
Cannot know. What Applejack reported, however, is that Princess Luna has been enriching her subjects' dreams since her return to the throne, and that she's grown tired of it. In particular, she's tired of creating nightmares. Most nightmares are invented by the dreamers who dream them, but some are invented by Princess Luna in order to keep ponies healthy--because yes, a certain number of nightmares are necessary for one's health. And while Luna has time to help out occasionally in dreamland while on vacation, as she recently did for Applejack's little sister, she simply doesn't have time to create new nightmares, nor does she want to. So she sent back a solution.
With Celestia's help, reported Applejack, Luna created a... creation called Mare Crisium, a being made from Celestia's dreams and capable of overseeing the creation of the healthy kind of nightmares, the kind that teach and enrich. She and Fluttershy released Mare Crisium into the world from Ponyville in a brief ceremony, after which they took questions while the silver mist dissipated through the sky on its way to canvass all Equestria. Your interim princesses assure you that nothing will go wrong--this new creation won't be doing anything that Luna didn't already do--if there are problems, you can report them to Chancellor Eris, but you probably won't notice a thing.
Yet you will notice. As it happens, Luna's creation is overzealous. Were the princesses drunk or otherwise out of their right minds when they created Mare Crisium? Was the stuff of Celestia's dreams less pure than either expected? Whatever the reason, this new entity is going to lodge itself into your mind at night, and try to teach you. Aggressively. With nightmares more intense and real than any you're likely to have had before. It may even find ponies with close relationships and bind their dreams together to save time and unite them in their struggles. But for all its cleverness, this new creation does not know what it is doing.
It's up to you to fight your fears, or what Mare Crisium thinks your fears are! We suggest that ponies roleplay this mega-plot in pairs or small groups. One person can play the nightmare itself, as created by Mare Crisium, and the other can play the dreamer, or a band of dreamers can sleep together and explore the same dreamscape. What could bring you closer to your friend or lover than helping them confront their darkest nightmare? It would be great to be people logging their dream adventures and posting them in the forum. And if you want to arrange private adventures in dreamland relating to this plot, please use this thread!
Of course, there's room for wakeful roleplay pertaining to this plot, too--comparing dream experiences, realizing there's a problem, and trying to find a solution. But the main reason this plot was created was to give everyone a chance to get involved in the story in small groups, without having to log on during peak times or be one of the more heroic characters. Everyone is capable of their own personal triumphs, which just may wind up adding up to an overall solution.
