It's a hot, hot day in Canterlot - Celestia must be in a bad mood. The cloudless sky offers no help, and the searing rays seem to be amplified by the shiny polished-marble architecture of the capitol. This in mind, it's understandable that most ponies (and griffons) are taking refuge in buildings cooled by systems of ice and magic. Eris, however, is not most. She jumps through a door into one of the University's many buildings and flaps her wings, doing a little dance to cool herself off. After a few embarrassing moments, she stops composes herself, and looks around for something to lead her to the office of her target: Marble Memory.
Well, Eris seems to have dived into the right building, the one that serves as the School of Bureaucratic Science, of which Marble is the dean. He is in his university office, looking through some student papers. He really should be delegating this to some professors or something, but hey!
Eris walks through the halls until she finds Marbles office. She checks the office again, then pulls out a stack of paperwork and checks /that/. Twilight would be proud. With a nod, she draws herself up (not that there's much to be drawn up) and knocks on the door.
Marble doesn't look up from his work, but he does call out. "Come in." Maybe it's the bran sandwich he ordered! The dean has been getting a little peckish, after all.
Eris opens the door slowly and asks, "Mister Memory? It's, uh, Eris." Pause. "Chancellor Eris, that is." Rub it in, why don't you? "I'm here on, uh, official business." She waves the stack of paperwork a little, to emphasize the point.
Marble looks up from a paper, hen lets it fall on his desk. His successor to the Chancellorship! He narrows his eyes. "That's 'Doctor' Memory." Marble says. Not that he really holds any of this against the griffon.
"Oh, uh, sorry," Eris apologizes, "I didn't know. Well, Mis- er, Doctor Memory, I'm here to get your signatures on this form 1457-7T/1." She holds the paperwork up to him - Form 1457-7T/1, Acknowledgement of Debt to the Town of Ponyville.
Marble takes the form to read it. "A debt form... to Ponyville?" Marble blinks. He wonders what this is about, so he begins to examine the data.
Eris nods and looks a bit uncomfortable. "Yeah. You, uh... y'know... the negative two votes..." She really doesn't want to rub it in. "The Mayor, she, uh, she asked me to collect. Something about community works projects. Planting trees, I think."
There's a melodious air of Raga, and with a distracted air, an earth-pony mare, mellow green with a variegated reddish mane, ambles into the office. She stands in the doorway with her eyes half-lidded and a far-off look to her expression...
Marble stares at the Chancellor, then looks down at the form. "I can't believe the mayor actually thinks a negative vote incurs a--" Marble blinks as he sees the arrival of the new pony. Oh, what now?
"Oh! Miss Tree_Hugger!" Eris smiles to the newcomer, then looks back at Marble. "This is Miss Tree_Hugger. I think she's heading up that project. Or... aligning the chi, or... something." The griffon looks a bit confused. "But, uh, on that form, page 32, there's a clause about nonmonetary/intangible debts being repaid. I- I think you might've even written that form, Mister Memory." From what she can tell, there was a lot /less/ paperwork in Town Hall before Marble's stint as Chancellor.
The mare stares. It'd be a little unnerving were she not so totally relaxed. ~"Something in the aura of this place, like, tells me that your current incarnation upon this transmigration of the wheel of the universe has made you decide to be Marble Memory. That, and, there's totally a sign on your desk, groovy."~ Her voice has the sort of flow that makes a pony slightly drowsy to listen to for long. ~"I totally can support your decision to be Marble Memory-- it's so authentic. And the little Griffon Mayor, that is so radical, to see you here too, it's like a perfect flawless alignment of every cosmic force coming into balance. Blessed be, Marble Memory, revel in being you."~
Marble listens to this introductory speech from Tree Hugger... and he can't help but fidget at his desk. What in Equestria is that? "...O... O-Oh dear..." Marble says, then he shakes his head. "I... uh... yes. I designed the form of which you speak... but I didn't..." Marble flips to page 32 of the form and reads through. ... Oh, he's airtight. "... O... O-Oh dear..."
Eris tries to correct Tree, holding up a talon. "I'm not Mayor I'm Ch-" But the New Age mare is on a roll, sio Eris gives up and listens, then looks quietly at Marble as he reads. "Yeah, you... you wrote it pretty good," she says, quietly. "On page thirty-/seven/ you'll see that the method or form of repayment of petty intangigle debts is, within reason, to be decided by the Mayor with advisement from, uh, the Chancellor-" she adds quietly at the end. "Ever since some filly destroyed the doors of a few public buildings, trees had to be cut to replace them, and now there's an effort underway to plant replacements." She glances at Tree_Hugger. "Something about a sustainable cycle of organic something. Or... whatever."
~"I'm sensing some tight vibes from you Marble. Maybe a little macrobiotic sprouted sunflower wheat bran yogurt, here, it will cleanse all your stress away."~ Taking a small clay cup in her teeth from one of the folds of her calico neck-scarf, she sets it down on the desk for the jittery bureaucrat. It looks frighteningly healthy. Maybe she'll get along with Marble better than it at first may seem. Smiling, eyes half-lidded, she slowly nods with Eris, perhaps not so much agreeing as liking the harmonies of her voice. ~"This is totally the truth, there are gaps in the aura of Ponyville that call out for trees to move to town. Trees are, like, the first citizens Ponyville ever had, y'know?"~
"Really?" Marble asks, then he sees the macrobiotic sprouted sunflower wheat bran yogurt. He can almost feel health radiating from it, and he looks delighted, picking up the cup and sniffs. "Mmmmmmmm...." After several moments, he looks over at Eris. "Please... continue. What does the effort need from me to repay the debt?" Marble fumbles around for a spoon.
Eris watcches the exchange, wondering if the mare has anything for griffons - but she doubts that Tree_Hugger keeps fish on her. "I, uh, I'm not sure, really. I believe, there, on attachment A, it states that, uh, physical labour..." She winces. "I think the Mayor meant, actually, like... /planting/ the trees." Eris shifts uncomfortably, then looks at Tree again. "Miss Hugger here is the head of the project, so she'd know best what needs to be done, though."
Bliss out, Marble. Ommm-a-pony... Ommm-a-pony... Like most offices, there's the obligatory dusty fern in the slant of light by the unopened (and probably painted shut) window, and Tree_Hugger is raptly staring at the fern. Finally she gently reaches out a hoof and strokes one of the fronds. She perks an ear towards the fern and listens. Very... very... intently. As Eris watches her, she listens to the fern. Finally, after a few moments of awkward to everypony-but-her silence, she turns to see them waiting for her to respond. ~"M'sorry, I must have been deep in a psychic conversation. Your fern misses its family."~ The fern... sits there. If it has an opinion, it's only sharing with Tree_Hugger.
MArble finally gets a spoon, sticks it in the macrobiotic sprouted sunflower wheat bran yogurt. He stops right as Tree Hugger finished and Eris told him what he's supposed to do. "I... *plant* the trees? The mayor *has* met me, right?" Marble then stares again at the hippy pony, then glances over at his decorative fern. "Um... I bought that fern in the student-run bookstore..." )
Eris stares at Tree as she... stares at the fern. Stare-staring. Tree_Hugger is wei- well, actually, compared to the other things Eris has seen around here, Tree is pretty tame. The griffon looks a bit confused, though, then Marble asks his question - then she giggles. "I, uh, I know she has. And I think that's why she specified the puni- er, method of compensation," she says with a mirthful smile. "She /did/ grumble something about 'using up all the ink', and 'so much more paperwork'."
Tree_Hugger gives one of her bobbing, utterly relaxed nods at Marble at this news. ~"Just, y'know, so you're groovy with it, that's all, your fern could use some private time, to heal and cleanse out any bad residue of the stress. Perhaps a visit home, for some bliss."~ Does even Marble_Memory have vacation forms for houseplants? She ambles back towards the desk, letting Eris finish. ~"The symmetry of it, the trees returning to the ground from where all of us came. It's, uh, not a perfect metaphor. But, think about it, Marble, doesn't it make your aura hum with vibrations of pure energy? The dirt on your hooves, the wind, it'll be in your mane, and there'll be sunlight, and you will feed upon the sunlight and the wind, like one of the trees themselves, as you put them into the waiting soil..."~ She sways a bit, looking blissful at the idea.
Marble is really not certain about what to do with Tree Hugger. So, he has to plant some trees for this mare around Ponyville... because he's -2 in votes for Chancellor? He really should have been more exact with those forms so he could worm out of this. But there's still the matter of TREE HUGGER. After a few moments... the dean stands up... picking up the potted fern, walking over to Tree Hugger with it and, after a few moments consideration, gives her the office plant.
Eris watches Tree Hugger, fascinated with her strange... everythingness. The griffon steps out of the way when Marble propo- er, gives the fern to Tree. Is he trying to distract the hippy? "You- uh, you'll have to fill out Attachment B, with the dates and hours of service, and Miss Hugger will sign off on it indicating satisfactory fulfillment. Debt will be considered settled once the Mayor recieves the completed package and approves it." Ugh, this chancellorness is making her /way/ too bureaucratic.
Tree_Hugger looks very pleased at the fern, and sets it squarely on her back, the pot nicely balanced. ~"Oh, wooow. That's... seriously groovy, Marble. I really dig the trust you've placed in both of us, to give your fern the freedom it craves. I will, like, totally not disappoint you."~ The fern will run free in the fields! ~"But, back to the trees, the ones for Ponyville, the Miss Mayor, and the little Griffon Mayor, here, they are... so very in-touch with the inner light of Ponyville, and they've agreed that planting trees, trees that will reach for the sun, and drink from the beautiful earth, and cast peaceful shade over the town, and give homes to, like all sorts of woodland creatures, like the rare Equestrian Flooftail, which, I have this photograph right here, and you can see how natural it looks in a tree, like daises on a hillside... and... oh. Bummer, I think I totally lost my train of thought? There were trees in it, I'm... sure of that."~
"Um... okay, I suppose there's no way to get out of-- Can I delegate an underling? I could probably wrangle Blueblood into doing it." Marble says, always looking for an out.
Eris is once again captivated by Tree Hugger. She... she's really not like the rest of us, is she? The mare certainly paints a beautiful picture, though. Eris then gives Marble a look. "No, there's no 'way out of it'," she says, then rolls her eyes. "There's a bunch of foals that'll be helpin', too. Most of Cheerilee's class, I think. So it should go quick." Yeah, right. Cutie Mark Crusaders tree planters? Cutie Mark Crusaders eco-warriors? "Uh, Miss Hugger, you were talking about the reforestation project. Planting trees? Mister Marble here will be helping? When and where do ya want him to show up?"
~"Oh, right, the trees. Ok, well, I've drawn up this chart, taking into account the local Feng Shui of the area, and the alignments of the planets this Summer, and your horoscope, Marble, because you're a very water-personality, if you don't mind my saying so."~ She pulls a sketch from her neck-scarf, drawn in colored pencils on the back of a flour label. ~"This will explain /everything/. (E) *Everything* (ing- ing ing)."~ That's an interesting reverb she's got there.
"I don't know what a water-personality is." Marble says, then peers at the chart. Then he whimpers. "I'm plantig most of these!"
Eris gazes at the chart. That's... a lot more organization from Tree_Hugger than she was expecting. "I guess two votes is worth a lot to the mayor - and, uhm, the environment," she says with a glance to the hippy. "Well, looks like that's that." She looks at Tree and asks, "Can he keep that? Or do you have a copy, or...?"
~"Fiiind your inner peace, Marble. Let me help balance your energy field."~ Tree_Hugger begins running her hooves along the contours of the uptight pegasus, not touching him but never more than an inch or two away. ~"Smoothing your flow. Chant with me, Marble. ~Omm Mane Pony Hummmmm.... Ommmmm Mane Pony Hummmm...~ Like, doesn't that feel more blissful?"~ Up close, she smells of patchouli and sandalwood. For a moment she stares somewhat blankly at Eris' question, then blinks, once, slowly. And a slow smile uncurls. ~"Marble doesn't need that, he's, like, one with the very forces of the diagram, it's aligned to his presence. Plus, I totally gave the other Miss Mayor a copy of it, too, because sharing, it's like caring, only not... not spelled the same way?"~
Oh, Marble is totally relaxed by what the hippy does. "AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!" Marble flails and steps back, falling onto his desk, knocking it and all his paperwork over, landing on his head and flailing! He is one with the spirit of the desk.
Tree_Hugger thinks Marble's personal mantra is totally groovy and joins him, warbling a mellow, 'Ahhhhh....', though with her it's more like a gentle exhalation than a primal shriek.
Eris squawks and jumps back at the flailing and the desking. She manages to knock over a filing cabinet when she starts back, causing her to squawk and flap in panic /again/, feathers going all over.
Tree_Hugger is utterly at peace amid all this flapping around and squawking and flailing. She smiles a gentle, wise smile, crossing both her hind legs in a lotus position and settling in to wait. ~"This excitement, it's so authentic, it's something deep, I think we're sharing a personal moment here, one that will never leave our souls. The trees will thank us for our excitement."~
Marble sits up from behind his knocked-over desk, papers on his head. He's not sure he's sharing anything, except maybe horror.
Eris blink-blinks from under a pile of paper and feathers inside of a small dust cloud, staring at Tree.
The new-age old-ways peacenik pony waits while everything, papers, dust, feathers, settles. She's making a gentle, low murmuring hum, either aligning chakras or checking her karmic balance.
Marble grabs Eris' form and just signs it, whimpering, and hoofs it over to the tiny griffon.
Eris rises from the pile and shakes herself off. >,@ She takes the form with a quick, "T-thanks, Doctor Memory," then looks around the place. Tree_Hugger with a fern, papers and feathers everywhere, Marble panicked... her job here is done. She smiles sheepishly and tucks the forms away. Eris backs up to the door, opens it behind her, glances back and forth suspiciously, and ~zing!~ she's gone, leaving only a griffon-shaped cloud behind.
~"Super, that's such a major sunshine moment, Marble, I'm so looking forwards to working with you, this will be totally totally amazing. Can I bring lunch? I should bring lunch. Do you like sprouted mung bean and wild dandelion salad? Ponyville is such a balanced, harmonious place, they've got a haydog vendor, I'll just ask him to make us one with everything."~ Her languid smile might mean that's a joke. Or... possibly not. Without waiting for a reply, she drifts out the door, leaving Marble alone in his office, without even a fern for company.
Well, Eris seems to have dived into the right building, the one that serves as the School of Bureaucratic Science, of which Marble is the dean. He is in his university office, looking through some student papers. He really should be delegating this to some professors or something, but hey!

Ponyville is such a balanced, harmonious place, they've got a haydog vendor, I'll just ask him to make us one with everything."~ Her languid smile might mean that's a joke. Or... possibly not.
