So, we haven't heard much news from the Mare Crisium, but I figured I'd give a bit of an IC report of what Ether has been doing with it, since he's been a bit involved. I think one might've expressed interest in joining in on it and I figure I'd sort of bring everyone up to speed in case others want to join, too.
I don't know how many still have an interest in the metaplot anymore, but personally, I'd like it to be wrapped up somehow, even if it's just something as simple as "Someone else fixed it, yay!". But you know, to bring a bit of closure to the storyline.
We could say Ether's report is included in the Ponyville Newspaper for people to read about it, although it can also be found at the MRC.
Intro
I am Ether, a Magic Analyst graduated from the Manehattan University, currently working at the Magic Research Center in Ponyville.
This journal is a brief description on the findings of the Mare Crisium spell. The viewpoint is my own and should be viewed with scrutiny. There has been few facts to find up until now, so most of what is written in here is a gathering of several correlating viewpoints and theories.
Purpose and Origin
Princess Luna designed a spell and called it the Mare Crisium. It was supposed to give us nightmares that help our minds process difficult events and move along or learn from them.
Princess Celestia seem to have been involved with the spell, but how exactly is unknown.
At the Ponyville square, Applejack and Fluttershy released the Mare Crisium, which is described as a rising mist that vanished into the air.
The materials used was a moonstone bowl filled with liquid moonstone. A ritual was then cast and the Mare Crisium spell was activated. No information or details of the ritual have been acquired. Applejack, Fluttershy, or Princess Luna may know more, but I have not been able to question them. The liquid evaporated and the moonstone bowl was left behind. The bowl was taken to the MRC in Ponyville for study and currently remains there.
As we all know, the spell did not work as intended. The nightmares plague many citizens in Equestria and makes it hard to get a good night's rest. While not outright dangerous, adverse effects such as fatigue, fear of sleeping, lack of focus and others have been reported. Long term exposure may have more severe effects.
Nature and Impact
The spell seems to affect only ponies in all of Equestria. This is unconfirmed, but Chancellor Eris of Ponyville, who is a griffon, does seem unaffected. There are, however, also many ponies who remain unaffected by this spell.
A theory is that when the Crisium was released, it latched onto as many ponies (and possibly other species) as possible and remained with those hosts. It would explain why some are unaffected, while others continue to suffer nightmares. This parasitic nature is unconfirmed, however.
Ponies sleeping in close proximity of each other may share the same Crisium nightmare. One case have been reported, this is unconfirmed due to lack of properly conducted tests.
The Mare Crisium spell is nocturnal in nature. Switching your sleep cycle to sleep during the day appear to mitigate the effects a little, but not completely. Confirmed.
Some theorize that the Mare Crisium is a sentient entity, this is unconfirmed.
Others theorize that the Mare Crisium is a primal force, simply a spell in effect. This is unconfirmed.
Mitigation
* Sleeping during the day seems to mitigate the effects of the Crisium a little, but far from completely.
* Solarium necklaces, which can replace nightmares with illusions of more pleasant dreams have been created. Two of these can be found at the MRC, but only work on one pony at a time. The Ponygale family is putting effort into using these to create a zone of mitigation, so more can enjoy a restful night.
Solution
No solution for the Crisium has been found yet, but with the help of the Ponygale family, we were able to isolate the Crisium energy and contain it in a Lunarium disc currently held at the MRC. With this, I have analyzed the Crisium and in Appendix 1 - Crisium structure, I have written as many details as possible to describe the signature and structure of the spell. With this knowledge, we can start developing counterspells targetted specifically at the Crisium or create a lure for it to confront it.
A suggestion at the MRC suggested we might create a lucid dream, then create a lure for the Crisium and confront it in the dream (Disclaimer, we don't know exactly what will happen). Any information you have that could be useful in this Endeavor is welcome, as is any other ideas you can come up with to help bring the nightmares to an end.

While there are many to give thanks, I'd like to give special thanks to the following;
Dusk for theory sparring and saving my life with a barrier spell when the first Solarium necklace exploded.
Mirage for theory sparring and acquiring research material.
Forge for crafting the Solarium necklaces and providing materials free of charge.
Rusty Nugget for providing materials free of charge.
ProgrammerPony (Terrance Ponygale), Horace Ponygale, Marigold Ponygale and Rupert Ponygale for getting a small part of the Crisium trapped in the Lunarium disc for analyzing. Also for showing kindness and hospitality after I fell ill with a fever after the ordeal.
