VIRGA
Day...it had returned. Virga knew he should be happy about that, but the night was his true place. The Sun as still high and Virga felt more tired than he remembered in a long while. The dark pegasi had taken a beating, haggard and ruffled, even bloodied. It wasn't to the extent of when he first arrived in Equestria, but it was still bad enough. The chance for his first battle at Celestia's side had been taken, and she had told him to heal. Outside the familiar old home of Fluttershy, the most peaceful place in the land, he knew he should be joining that fight. One step forward, he swayed on his legs. The Sun was bright, full sun. A pair of goggles over his eyes protected his vision. He never wore goggles in the day before.
FIREFLY
Firefly is making her rounds. Her duties were basically a do whatever but be ready for anything when the sun was up. With her Lady Luna sleeping, she could not use the metal machine for any fun. It required Luna to be awake. This left..everything! A few cookies at Sugarcube, some tea at the new teahouse across the road from Chance and Starfire's tree, and a lemon cupcake. Then to Fluttershy's to check on the critters and re-fill the humming bird feeders for her.
VIRGA
What was Virga's day like? Well, it went like this. Wake, eat, fly, return to the palace if possible, eat, sleep. No socializing, no training, no summoning--only directions--and certainly no 'rounds'. This often made him wonder why Celestia asked him to be her personal guard when his routine was so...vastly different from everypony else who bore a moniker of guard. Delivering letters was out of the question these days; dragons handled that. In the old days, he would carry letters with a royal seal. As he walked, his wings drooped a little more. Flying courier was how he met his first team....first? Only team. He didn't have a team now. The Sun, even with 100% tint on his goggles, seemed so bright..too bright.
FIREFLY
Firefly glides in towards Fluttershy's cottage from the palace way, opposite Everfree and the woods. She had the sun behind her, as she preferred to fly, so was allright until she spun around and landed on the walk, now facing into the light as well. "Egads."
VIRGA
Egads? What a familiar voice--Firefly. The tired, battered thing turned to look at her. It had been awhile since he last saw her. He didn't dare voice it, but she was the pony that kept him going...not Celestia. "I'm...home...." he said quietly, thoroughly out of it. Those were the same words he spoke just before the fight with that doll. History repeated itself here in some way.
FIREFLY
Firefly turns an ear and then herself at some sound, then perks her ears. "Virga!" trotting over to him. "Wow. You look like the Ponyville train ran over you. That last mission must have been some fight...was it as glorious as it looks?" she asks? nosing gently.
VIRGA
Virga froze when she nosed, for he nosed in return. He didn't want to think, or do anything but be there with her. Those wings sank further, and further...tip they draped the ground. "No," he said, such unusual response for a pony like him. "I'm...outdated, Firefly. There's not much of a place for me anymore." He slowly slipped closer, lightly planting his nose against her shoulder. "Everything will be fine. They will handle it."
FIREFLY
Firefly says "Oh, enough of that." she says gently, sitting there with him. "We were the most powerful of our kind in our worlds, yes...in this world we are outclassed, yes, but that is no reason to think you are outdated." smiling. "I have no real clue how Celestia handles her guard...perhaps this is why Luna hasn't any...but are we not but tools to be used as our leaders see fit?"
VIRGA
Virga leaned his weight even more against Firefly, his love. He still hadn't recovered entirely from the Changeling Incident before being sent out. Those years of abuse he took in the old day; somehow this was harder. "Guard," he said. "I'm not sure if I'm even that. What good am I when the Harmonic Elements resolve most everything sincere?" He let his wings spread across the ground. He was missing feathers, others had been burned, and some snapped from the overuse of his own power. "I am outdated, Fire, not because of being outclassed. I am outdated whereas you continue learning from your Princess. I learn nothing from mine." He sat back just a bit and tiredly gazed at the plants Fluttershy had set up. "I'm a has been. I feel old...yet I'm not old. I have...utterly no aspirations."
FIREFLY
Firefly says "I tend to see it slightly differently. Here, the Elements are the Guardians....we are here for when they fail." helping support him. "I look at it like a vacation we so rightly deserve....as for training...she trains me because I push her to do so. I train with or without her, but I learned that if I make my training look bad she can't help but teach me how to do it right." giving a giggle. "And we can train anytime you want, we DO have an arena at the palace, and I have all of Everfree at my disposal."
VIRGA
"For when they fail...have they ever?" Virga said. The Elements were the guardians. He did not have an issue with any of the ponies who held an Element. Rather, this came from within and he knew it. "The relation you have with Luna, Fire, does not exist between Celestia and myself. My service to her is...sparse and..." He shuddered then, and a few shards of ice littered the ground. This greatly upset him inside, enough that his own power had a life of its own to express it. "Why...why did she ask me to be her guard?" he said. "Why? With so many talented ponies about, why?" He looked Firefly in the eye as best he could, those goggles really did get in the way of that. "The night she asked me was after having me read very ancient pony script. She seemed very lost in her thoughts for several moments before asking....why?"
FIREFLY
Firefly says "They have failed, yes...but usually single. They only have true power when they are united as one, much like the Rainbow Locket from my homeland." nodding. "I just never let it get me down." brushing at the ice crystals with a wing. "Celestia does what most leaders do, surround themselves with power. A shield, if you will. My task for example, is not to fight for Luna should something truly bad arise...but to defend her until she has time to handle it. To give her that opening to deal with whatever it is. Celestia usually stops me before I get to do anything too you know. She puts me in these horrid bubbles of hers."
VIRGA
This was frustrating, especially frustrating to Virga. It seethed off him like steam. He was used to older rulers, who would actually have him implement his power to make point. He sat there in front of his dearly beloved in shambles, or so that was the way he saw things. Briefly he eyed his own wings, as he if didn't know what to do with them. Virga hadn't even been this flustered since arriving in Equestria, now it was apparent how much this did bother him. He shook raising his wings, those same ones Firefly admired so much when they first met. Cold mist poured from them in droves, the feathers glowed ice-hot. One downward sweep from his strained wings flooded the Whitetail Wood along his hoof prints in the grass and dirt with impaling pillars and blistering hoarfrost that screamed horrors, the depths of the underworld. Trees, flash frozen, plants too. It all came to a head and exploded forth in a dizzying frenzy. And that...'that'...was an iota of Virga's power while 'out of condition' for battle.
Public Shout: And suddenly, a loud crash tore through portions of Whitetail Wood. The ice came, flash freezing trees amidst frightening dust that sang a chorus of fear and otherworldly bellows. FLASH, reduced to ice-dust."
36 folks heard that.
FIREFLY
Firefly's ears swing forward at the icy display, having snapped them shut at the blast. "That still amazes me to no end." she mrrs quietly. "So lovely in the light, soothing and cool." letting out a sigh. "You have a thousand times more power than I do, In my world, my true power was speed, strength and agility. Most demons and dragons are lightning resistant." giving a soft laugh. "As are most evils here. Why are we in such places of service? Probably the old addage, keep the power under your eyes. Hard to say. My place never was to question, just follow orders."
VIRGA
Virga visibly shook after that display. More feathers fell, his fur lost color. Though his ears turned pink at her compliments to his power, he knew that Firefly was actually more powerful than he was. It just took a different form. Nightshade would likely have a field day if she had seen that; the projection of emotional anger, the desire to cause harm in his talent. "I only have the power I do, Fire, because of what I am...which is something I've not said..."
FIREFLY
Firefly angles an ear. "You are Virga, Halo Pegasus. Besides...you could easily defeat my lightning...ice is water, even frozen it conducts and channels lightning. My only other skill is the Shockwave...but I am forbidden by Luna to use it since I demonstrated it over Ponyville that day." sighing quietly. "I can no longer control superstorms...just large ones at best." she opens her wings. "I gave up my three weather boons to accept three from my Princess Luna...and have yet to learn what they are or how to use them...though one has a cool effect."
VIRGA
"No...no..."he said. Now that he shortly clouded the area in an icy mist, he pushed up his goggles to look at her with his real eyes, those silver eyes she fell in love with. "I am Virga, of a small lost and forgotten province called Equephel, a province to the North in the Arctic." He freely admitted it with her. "There's reason it doesn't exist in history books....before returning home, I was on a mission to survey the Crystal Mountains, a place I used to fly." He drew closer to her, nose to nose in face, as if everything that was his existence lingered on what he was about to say. "It stirs...1,000 years ago, it disappeared. 1,000 years ago I was subjected to the spell that threw me upon Celestia's balcony. Why...why did Celestia remarked to me the pony tongue in that book she had a difficult time remembering is because...it stirs.' He leaned away from her, peering at the damage he'd done. A place with great powerful magic...not too different from yours." Silence...and then he eyed her again. "You sure you wish to part with them?"
FIREFLY
Firefly smiles and noses, staring into his eyes. "I already parted with them," spreading her wings a bit more, revealing the six nicely spaced ebon black feathers in their place. "I knew you were from the past...I am just from across the great oceans." then angles an ear. "So, you were pulled from time about the same time Luna was placed within the moon by Celestia. Interesting."
VIRGA
Virga eyed the new feathers. Again, it reminded him of the intimate bond those two had. He still felt distant from Celestia in this regard...but he admired these feathers, and how they fit nicely on her. "Not only was I pulled from that time, there was something else occurring at the same." He kept his nose pressed to hers and slowly closed in, folding his wings about her shape the best he could. "Ask Luna about it, the crystal shard Celestia keeps stored and hidden away. 1,000 years ago, it disappeared. My province was on its outskirts; I was sparred the curse."
FIREFLY
Firefly hrrs and leans into him a bit, for support. "That was long before my time. But I can ask." giving a slight giggle. "The only other creatures I read about from the library books were the Wendigos, who...." pausing. "...who had powers of ice and snow...but they were beaten back by the three Tribes...via the power of Friendship.,,,or so the story goes." then cups an ear. "Are you a Wendigo?"
VIRGA
"Ask her, I insist," Virga said. "She'll probably want to see me right quick when you do." He was in a better mood now; she was here, he was here. Though battered and in pain, he was...happy...at this moment. "My father...and a pegasus. That is why my body is constantly cold. But it is only half the reason why I wield my talent the way I do."
FIREFLY
Firefly says "Don't ever let the locals find out...they would run stories in the local newspaper for years on you...a living legend." hrrring softly. The news didn't bother her. "Though I am curious now, about the other half of your reason vor wielding your power so."
VIRGA
"Eventually they will," he said. "I come to Fluttershy for treatment because she doesn't talk much. If I went to normal doctors, they'd discover I'm not the temperature I should be. I am fully pegasus, but who I am inside is Wendigo. My mother died in the winter after I was born, a social reject because she had become hateful. Wendigos do have a physical form, but most often they do not. Attracted to my father's power, and essence, she gave up a normal life...and now you stand here before me, accepting it...like she accepted a Wendigo when a pony should fear one."
FIREFLY
Firefly says "Who you are is more than whatever body you possess...among the locals here I was somewhat of a freak. Luna was the only one who accepted me as is. That had a large bearing on how I came to be in her service." smiling. "As for the locals, you are a Halo Pegasus, and this is what a halo Pegasus is. They will get used to that and really, would never have a reason to dig on it. Nopony ever really dug at me, except for Luna, on how I was able to surround Cloudsdale in a hutticane. Most accepted that it was part of my being a Storm Pegasus. Even now few know the truth. And while I still can turn out a nasty hurricane...nothing on that level is within my ability anymore. And I have a feeling, once I learn these new tricks from Luna...most will fear me again. I just don't care what they think. I'm me, and I'm happy to me engaged to you, wendigo or no."
VIRGA
She made him melt like butter over scalding volcano. Virga leaned further into Firefly and draped his wings across her back. "Fire..." he said. "How do you manage that, turning everything around for me?"
FIREFLY
Firefly laughs softly. "I am just me. That's how." giving a nosing. "Now how about we get you inside. I can make some soup and you can relax while I feed the critters." holding up a wing with a silver key dangling from the tip. "My Liason to Ponyville, Fluttershy, gave me a key some time ago. I like to rest here myself time to time. She has the softest sofa."
VIRGA
Yes, he needed rest. He'd almost forgotten that with Firefly here to distract him. "I hope me being on her sofa doesn't give her a scare when she returns home. We haven't seen each other since I had recovered from the fall."
FIREFLY
Firefly says "I am sure she won't be upset...she finds me there often as it is...though I tend to nod off behind the sofa, in case anypony comes in and needs to use it." laughing, helping him on inside after unlocking the door. "The pillows and blankets are where they always are. Get commfy and I'll see about some soup...so what do you like?"
VIRGA
Virga weakly stepped in, remembering the first time he came here. It was a bit crowded then, but Fluttershy did her best. He took his place on the sofa and sprawled his full length. Rest, actual rest on something soft..."Normal vegetable soup, if its available."
FIREFLY
Firefly says "Oh, that she has plenty of always. Most critters of hers love it." laughing as she looks him over. "Tomorrow we'll go outside and I'll stir up a rain to wash your fur and feathers out. I know that always makes me feel better." then trots off to get some soup put together. "So what exactly caused this, if I might ask? I mean, I know your missions are secret, so I won't ask if it would cause trouble."
VIRGA
Yes, that sounded nice...rain...especially Fire's rain. He closed his eyes and almost drifted off until she spoke up again...this sofa..he needed something like it. Not exactly like it, but the softness. "It wasn't my mission that caused this," he said. "I had just returned from flying in the Crystal Mountains, when I found the Palace under the control of a Discord-tainted doll. A battle ensued...I'm afraid I made a mess of the foyer. The entire grand balcony was destroyed."
FIREFLY
Firefly says "The Crystal Mountains?" returning with some fresh vegetable soup. "Reminds me of another tale...a Crystal Empire..it vanished 1000 years ago...seems many things in this land revolve around that number...1000." laughing. "Though it is said without the Crystal Heart, it probably will never return." then angles her head. "A...doll?" then blinks. "The repair unicorn crews are far to efficient anymore...I never noticed anything was missing from the Palace."
VIRGA
Virga sat up and gazed at Firefly when she mentioned the Crystal Empire. "Well, now you know the other reason I wield Ice the way I do,' he said, sniffing the air for the soup. "I am a natural born citizen of the Crystal Empire. I keep my mane short for that reason."
FIREFLY
Firefly gives him the bowl and nods. "I have only heard the tales...not being from Equestria I know little from fact or fiction in these tales." nodding. "But It is wonderful you honor their memory by keeping your mane in that style." Smiling. "And its adorably handsome."
