Characters: Bardigan, Solar Solstice
Setting: Bard and Solar meet and share their wide-eyed idealism with each other
Evening is settling in here at the outskirts of Ponyville, the stars beginning their harmonious music as night enters its domain. In the calm silence of the dark there is only the whispering of nocturnal voices, the dim and secretive creatures that dwell beneath the stars, and the eager eyes of the few who wonder at them. Wondering, indeed, and wandering, is what Solar Solstice is known for. Even now the young earth-pony stallion is making the final adjustments to his telescope as the last rays of sunlight vanish like a dream. Today is a good night for stargazing.
There is another patrolling the hills with an activity beyond just walking in mind. The stars and the open country are something to be appreciated, especially by minds that already have an artistic bent to them. Bardigan has decided to perform for them tonight, flying several feet above the ground. He twists and twirls and waltzes solo, occasionally stirring up blades of grass or petals of flowers as he sings a song, a song that is melancholy yet hopeful, quiet yet... with quite a voice of its own. "... oh simple thing... where have you gone? I'm getting old and I need something to rely on..." He dips every now and then, touching the grass and the flowers as if touching the hooves of an appreciative audience.
Solar_Solstice is the first to hear this mysterious song. He looks up and around with his spyglass, alerted by the music, and just like that he glimpses a pegasus stallion flying about, seemingly the source of the melody. He gazes upward, full of ineffable awe. "Oh wow..."
"So if you have a minute why don't we go~Talk about it somewhere only we know?" The pegasus continues his flight of fancy, coming upon Solar without any fanfare. He barely even acknowledges the other stallion save for a tip of his hat and a little glance. He lands and struts past the astronomer, calling out to the world around him rather than to any pony in particular. "This could be the end of everything~So why don't we go~ somewhere only we know..." He doesn't stop walking, doesn't snap out of his reverie, until at last the song comes to a slow burn, then his voice fades altogether. He flaps his wings and stands looking away from Solar, up at the sky.

<OOC> Bardigan says, "On a side note, that is one of the very few fics I've found in the fandom that I found genuinely sad."
Solar_Solstice merely stares at the singing pegasus as his voice dwindles away. After a few moments of tense hesitation he finally gets the courage to say something. "Uh...wow, you sing very nice, sir."
"So I've been told," the pegasus says with a ghost of a smile on his lips, not that Solar can see it. He continues to watch the stars. "Do you think Princess Luna knows?" he asks out of the blue. "When we appreciate her night like this? I wonder sometimes, if these serenades of mine are heard by either of them. I should ask her, next time we meet."
Solar_Solstice blinks and stares even harder, if that's even possible. He always considered himself a dreamer, but he had yet to meet anypony who was an even bigger dreamer than he was...that is, until now. He figures that now we be an appropriate time to express something profound. "That...sounds really nice." Well horseapples. "I...I guess they might, if they're listening hard enough...uh...I mean..." He swallows.
"Oh! Goodness me. I'm being so impolite! What cause have to call myself 'gentlepony' when I tread upon another's intimate time with themselves and do not even introduce myself?" Suddenly all grandeur and pomp the pegasus turns around and bows deeply, removing his hat. "Sir, I am Bardigan. Playwright, songwriter, dabbling musician, would-be artist..." He comes back up, all smiles for the other stallion. "Might I have the pleasure of knowing *your* name?"
Solar_Solstice realizes that he's probably talking to a Very Important Pony and almost loses even more of his already miniscule composure. He really wishes that Nightshade were here to be diplomatic for him, but alas. "I...uh...my name is Solar Solstice," he blurts out. "I live in Ponyville...I think?" Pause. "You don't sound like you're from Cloudsdale..."
"I was. I was born there at least. But my parents traveled quite a lot." Bardigan takes a few steps down the hill and looks out over the horizon. "I don't really live anywhere, now," he murmurs quietly. "Well. I have a house in Canterlot, even if it's not really *home.* But that's neither here nor there. I used to live in Ponyville, too." He chuckles and turns back to Solar, seemingly indifferent to his stuttering. "Used to be famous in these parts, in fact! It was a joy... Princess Luna herself came 'round to see my performance. Ah, the bittersweet sting of nostalgia."
Solar_Solstice gains a quizzical expression. Given that Princess Luna only last visited less than a year ago he wonders how Bardigan could have become un-famous so quickly. "So...where have you been, then? I mean...there are a lot of ponies who would like your music, so why not stay here and...make music?"
"Away," Bardigan answers with a strange half-smile. "From here, from myself... sheltering in the bright blinding lights of my Canterlot venues and beyond! You understand, sir, there are a great many ponies in *other* places that enjoy my music as well! I can't very well abandon them. But just as the wind eventually circles back to where it started, my hooves took me back here. At least now I may properly explore the changes wrought by time that came to this village."
Solar_Solstice blinks. "If you were here when Princess Luna came, then you couldn't have been gone for more than a year," he observes. His initial awe and wonder is starting to give way to mere confusion; these artsy types sure talk funny.
"Yes," Bardigan replies with a nod. "A quick fall followed by a faster recovery. Rather good fortune!"
Solar_Solstice doesn't find this particular explanation plausible, but he's tactful enough to play along for now. Still, however weird Bardigan's approach is, he can't help but feel elated by the music he had been produced just earlier. "You write anything about...the stars?"
Bardigan's smile grows ever so slightly. He turns away and gives Solar a coy look out of the corner of his eyes. "Why... yes. I have composed several ballads and have numerous favorites myself. Just *look* at them." He points a hoof upwards. "What can your imagination do but soar when you consider them? Endless lights in a sea of dark, reminding us that even in the vast distances between worlds there are points of life and hope!" His smile falls just a bit. "I have a friend who tried to fly to one once. On her wings."
Solar_Solstice gazes upward as Bardigan speaks, a flight of fancy slowly overtaking him. Yes...the stars were always at the forefront of his dreams. "My imagination...I see a lot of things with my imagination." He steps past Bardigan towards a small crest in the hill. "I see ponies reaching out to walk amidst the countless stars, sailing magnificently on ships of aether and light as the glorious dawn of a thousand worlds bears them greeting. I see them standing amidst a thousand horizons, looking to build a new future...think about it, for every star out there there has to be a world like ours: thousands of worlds, thousands of peoples. Maybe all they're waiting for is to meet us, to meet each other, so that the whole universe can live in Harmony." He reaches upward with his forehoof, as if to grasp the sky, feebly but passionately. "Or that's what I see sometimes. Most of the time...I just think about how we're ever gonna get up there." He turns to Bardigan, looking sad but determined, but then he realizes something. "That friend of yours...was her name Diamond Dancer?"
"It is," Bardigan says with a very fond little smile. "Her dreams were no smaller than your own, my friend. I'm glad to know she's still here and doing well for herself. Very glad..." He sighs and closes his eyes, taking a minute to simply breathe the night air. "She wanted to pluck a star from the sky itself. Very sad time that was." He heaves another sigh. "So many ponies can forget the wonders that await us here in Equestria. Often just down the street.'
Solar_Solstice decides to leave out the part about Diamond Dancer becoming inexplicably evil lately. ((Note: somepony put up the log for that!)) "Down the street...yeah, I can see what you mean." In truth, the earthly world really didn't have that much hold upon him. Everything in this world was so...ordinary and expected. The Everfree Forest was, at least, very unusual, but that's not quite enough. No, he gaze is firmly starward, searching for...what? He's not quite sure, actually, what drives his fascination, and he wonders if he'll ever know. It is a disturbing mystery. "You know, there's an old story about how the stars can affect the lives of ponyfolk who live here on the ground," he says. "How the sky itself can write our destiny."
"I've heard. The stars affect us in ways we have yet to discern," Bardigan agrees. "Why do you think our own Princess Luna is such a grand mystery in herself? If she represents the night sky, she must be a reflection of all the things up there we will likely never understand." The bard smiles and shrugs. "Of course, there is beauty in never knowing as well."
