Characters: Solar Solstice, Chance
Setting: Solar and Chance talk about work, life, and machines
Solar_Solstice is feeling quite pooped after a hard day's work at the market, but all in all he's very satisfied with his efforts today. He slowly saunters back home along the southern road, taking a large cart behind him on his shoulders. He'd sent the rest of the workers away to rest, wanting to show concern. Ah, is that the scent of apples? He sniffs the air, liking the taste of it.
Chance is relaxing against the fence lining the road to the Acres. He's finished his own day of work, but as usual for him, he doesn't seem tired at all. He perks up as he hears the cart, then spots Solar. He smiles and trots on over. "Good evening Solar. How are you this evening? Anything special bring you this way?" he greets the other.
Solar_Solstice blinks and gazes at Chance, a smile breaking out. "Oh hey, Chance! Good to see you around! I'm just bringing our shop cart home; sold a few widgets today to some unicorns, so its been a good haul. What about you? Prepping up for harvest season?"
Chance gives a light chuckle. "With Applejack, I think every day is prepping for harvest season." His swivels his ears forward though. "It's a pleasure to see you tonight. What kind of widgets are you selling?"
Solar_Solstice chuckles at that. "I'd believe that!" In response to Chance's question, he undocks the cart from over his withers and walks around to the gate on its side. "Oh, just simple components for ponies' home appliances. I have a bunch of connectors for plumbing and heat, some mechanical pump parts, but we mostly do machines and steam engines." He presents all these parts as he talks about them. He says nothing about the watch around his neck, probably the most interesting 'machine' within several miles save maybe whatever Twilight Sparkle has obtained from Canterlot. "Some ponies are starting to get steam machines now, so we're anticipating an increase in demand."
Chance trots over to glance at what Solar shows him. "Ah yes, your family business." The other pony need not tell about his watch, as Chance has seen it before. "How is that going? Anything new or interesting being made?" he then inquires.
Solar_Solstice blinks again, but in that surreptitious manner that he adopts, discreetly, when he tries to think of an evasive answer. "Ah, well, we have a few projects we're working on, but it's a but hush-hush, you know? For, uh...commercial purposes." That part was, at least, perfectly true. "Actually...I'll let you in on a little secret." He makes the very obvious gesture of look around him suspiciously before digging into the cart again with one hoof and producing a shiny new flyer. "My Pa is organizing it; he thinks its a good way to help advance the art of mechanics." Indeed, for the flyer reads, in large letters: 'A Cordial Proposal: Gearshaft and Son Ltd. would like to invite all tinkerers, mechanics, inventors, and engineers to the 1st Annual Tinkerer's Convention, to be held outside of Ponyville in the early Fall'. There is also a picture of stylized ponies surrounding by spinning cogwhells.
((It hasn't happened yet XD It's in the works, though, promise))
Chance nods slowly. "Quite understandable." as Solar adds in the 'commercial purposes' portion. His ears swivel foward at the 'secret' though, and he chuckles lightly as Solar peeks around. "There's nopony here except us." he assures his friend. He glances over the poster. "Most interesting. I was never into such things myself, but I'm sure it'd be neat to see."
PUB >> Splatterpaw the stumbling terror says, "What the [Cuddly] is going on??"
Solar_Solstice grins. "I'm sure it will be! We're still in the preliminary stages so there's lot of room for planning and, uh, visioning." He closes up the cart and just sits down in the grass for a while. "You know its been a while since we just talked...how's the work handling ya?"
Chance nods lightly to Solar, then settles down beside him. "Oh, work's going well. It's good honest work, and Applejack is a wonderful employer. That I live not too far from here helps, at lesat as far as convience goes." he tells Solar. "How are things with you?"
"The same as ever, I guess," Solar replies. "Though...my sister got herself appointed to some kind of position in the Royal Court. Imagine that, and she's barely older than Applejack, too! I'm a little worried, though; it seems really important, and really stressful, for somepony as young as her."
Chance thinks for a few moments. "Forgive me, but I can't recall who your sister is.." he says, glancing to Solar.
"Nightshade," Solar says. "She doesn't really go out much; she's always busy doing research or helping us with our projects. She's probably even busier now thanks to her new appointment." He sighs a little, glancing at a tall mountain in the distance that reminds him of Canterlot. "I dunno why I feel so...anxious about it. I mean, its not like she's doing anything /dangerous/."
Chance says "Ah yes, Nightshade." He chuckles lightly and grins to Solar. "It's because you're her brother. Nothing more is needed. Besides, doing dangerous things is my job." he teases."
Solar_Solstice peers at Chance. "Oh, really? And just what exactly is dangerous about- oh...right, but that's not really technically your /job/ per se."
Chance chuckles softly. "Perhaps not, but I do occassionally move beehives around the farm. That could be considered dangerous."
"By your standard, /my/ job is more dangerous than yours!" Solar declares, having a good chuckle out of this sudden witty twist. "When my Pa started the workshop we didn't have all our safety equipment yet, so there were a lot of close scrapes. If Ma hadn't been around to help with her unicorn magic we might have a few extra scars here and there."
Chance grins and relaxes back. "Oh? Do tell. I think I'd like to see your workshop sometime. Get a better feel for what you do on a daily basis. I wonder if Starfire would like to see it as well.." he muses.
Solar_Solstice beams, looking a bit giddy all of a sudden. "I...well...we'd be happy to show you two around," he says amid barely hidden excitement. "We're open most days, and we don't usually get a lot of visitors, so you're welcome to come anytime!"
Chance grins lightly at the news. "I'd be happy to do so. I'll have to ask Starfire if she wants to. It would be something different for us to do."
Solar_Solstice nods. "Definitely. Anyway, I gotta bring this on home. See ou around, and thanks for talking." He smiles and bows to Chance once more before hitching the cart onto his shoulders again and walking off.
Chance stands up himself and gives a smile. "We should do this more often." he replies. "Take care!" and he heads off himself.
