Good evening my little ponies! Welcome to another class of The Fine art of Role Play! Ill be your teacher this evening, the fantastic, fashionable filly, filling your fantasies with flavor- Rarity.
Now, then darlings, before we begin, I have TWO disclaimers for you, something I simply MUST address: These views discussed below are simply my own opinions and not such that of Equestira Muck’s staff, or the hard working wizards that run our little corner of the web!
Thats the first one. As for the second one...um...*Blush* Miss Rarity, AHEM, your darling teacher just happened to be a butterhooves the other evening and dropped her precious laptop all over the floor while working upon a fabulous new dress. So, long story short, there MAY be some spelling errors and the like because some of my keys no longer work to full functionality.
Now then, lets get started, shall we?! The topic tonight, is the ever popular phrase- It's a game' uttered by dozens of folks a day. In this particular venue, when someone gets a bit steamed over an event that might have occurred.
Now, you may be wondering WHY I'm telling you this- or wondering if something may have happened? Not to my personal knowledge, but I'm writing this particular message BEFORE something like this occurs, and I'm sure that it will, with the influx of visitors to our fair Equestria.
So what exactly is Miss Rarity's problem, with the concept of 'it's a game'?
Well simply this, darling: there are times when uttering that phrase may in fact, be fair and reasonable. Upon hearing foals scream obscenities while playing such detestable titles such as Modern Warfare or Battlefield. Or other games with high levels of competition and aggression. Ick.
(And a tip. You are going to die playing those games. It will happen. A lot. Calm down, take a breath and respawn. It is not the end of the world, and you achieve nothing by screaming into your microphone about how someone else is a fag. Honestly, are you even listening to yourself? Do you know what kind of person you sound like saying such terrible things? Is this what you want your image to be- the person you want the world to see you as? The game is not about being 'the best' There is ALWAYS someone better than you. It's about having fun and DOING your best while playing. If you were the best, then you'd have reached the top. And we all know there's no where to go once you've reached the top. There's nothing more to learn. Everyone would lose to you. The game would no longer be fun, and you'd have to find something else to fill your time with. )
(...Sorry. How DID I get onto this soap box? Where was I?)
Yes, darling. Telling someone to calm down when playing a game as such is reasonable, but not in this case. Not on the muck darling. You see, the muck is not a game. It is a social interaction between ponies involved in telling a story. Our stories. It is social interaction between ponies wanting to explore and share in a wonderful world filled with magic and friendship. It's a place where race, creed, and social status fall away to everyone being ponies with FANTASTIC hair.
It's not a game, darling. It's a social interaction- and that is the point entirely. In this day and age, you spent a great deal of time on the internet. In fact, more people probably know your internet handle than they do your real name. This is LIFE for some people. Young people, without cars or jobs, or more importantly, a way to interact with other people if they haven't a way to do so otherwise. After school, if your stuck home and you're not in a neighborhood with anyone else your age, the internet is a good way to fix that problem. Go outside and play capture the flag with your friends." has turned into "Start up a match playing capture the flag with your online buddies"
But where does this all fit in to our little corner of the net? Well darling, Anonymity has a way of breeding hostility. We are very visually oriented when engaging with folks face to face- most communication is 80% non-verbal after all. Facial ticks and observation. When you remove that, all you have is 20% of words and language. And 10% of that is emphasis on words you use, and sentences you choose. When it all boils down to it, we're only discussing 10% of the things we're trying to say to others online. And that means it's very easy to make mistakes. Mistakes lead to irritation and annoyances. Those fester and boil into irrational dislike and distrust far more easier than one might imagine and that can quickly turn towards flat out dismissal of others. Often, to save face or if we upset someone else, or offend someone, we will remind ourselves that it is "Just a game" and that they really shouldn't take things so seriously.
But it isn't just a game, darling. This is an important place for all of us, and we need to do our utter best to get along. Remember, friendship is magic! If you EVER find yourself thinking that phrase in any situation on the muck, stop and think instead, what you can do to help the situation or improve the situation. Can you be a mediator? Perhaps stop and explain things to the fullest extent that you can? Turn the other cheek if you possibly can, or just let go and forgive and forget? These are important steps to maturing and growing as a person (Pony) and it's ever so important HERE. Nobody wants to leave frustrated and isolated and alone, and everypony wants to have a good time.
If you have a problem with somepony, remember, they'll be back tomorrow, and so will you. You want to get along for everyponys sake. (They might be rping in a situation you'd love to join and you don't want to join with a vendetta or an issue. That makes everybody uncomfortable and ruins everyone's good time, and you don't want that on your shoulders, do you?)
So to that end, try and get along, and feel free to approach any of the FCs (Myself, or my darling friends, Pinkie Pie, Rainbow Dash, Fluttershy, Twilight Sparkle, or Apple Jack) if you have any problems or concerns. But darling, please, don't ever think that it's just a game. Social interactions always come attached to real life feelings, and real life feelings are utterly easy to be dismissed and to be trampled over on something like the internet, and that is the last thing we want in a place where friendship is magic.
