OOC Date: June 16, 2013
Characters: Rainbow Dash, Bumblesweet
Setting: Rainbow is familiarized with an aspect of the earth pony economy: beekeeping
Summer means /totally chillin' out/ for Rainbow Dash, because in summer the weather is always sunny, which means less work. She glides across the sky with full abandon, letting the currents carry her wherever they deign to go. Times like these were the best: just letting the wind take you to whatever place was interesting. One time she even ended up in Baltimare! "Hey down there!" she shouts at the earth mare, giving a playful salute as she banks around and comes towards her. "Hey there, citizen! How's things?"
Bumblesweet startles a bit when something bigger than a robin goes swooping overhead, blinking like a daylighted owl for half a moment before her face lights up with recognition. "Hi! Things are great! Are..errr.. aren't you Rainbow Dash?" She asks, sounding half foolish for not knowing for sure, and half awed at getting to meet a celebrity. She's a bit of a social recluse, this one. When you spend most of your life living on the fringes of town almost exclusively in the company of bees, you tend to garner a reputation as being a little... Odd. Especially when you become more fluent in buzzing than your first language. So, though she's /seen/ RD around Ponyville a few times on her ventures into town, it's always been from a distance. She holds out a hoof politely. "I'm Bumblesweet."
Rainbow_Dash isn't meeting her first bee-like pony, that's for sure. "Yep, that's me, the one and only Rainbow Dash!" she declares, patting her chest with a hoof proudly. "Good to meet ya, Bumblesweet! I'm guessing you're in charge of, uh..."
"Pollen location and honey production oversight." Bumble replies matter-of-factly. She normally would object to the idea of being 'in charge', but she's basically the Queen Bee. Can't really argue her position, even if she does consider herself as more of a mother-figure than a boss. After a moment she puts her hoof down awkwardly. "Thanks for all the rain last month. The flowers are really loving it." And so are the bees, by extension.
<OOC> Bumblesweet is curious who else is bee-like?

<OOC> Bumblesweet ahs.
Rainbow_Dash tilts her head for a few seconds as she deciphers Bumblesweet's earthponyspeak. "Oh, you make honey! Right right..." She grins as she's thanked. "You're welcome! I mean, I always do my best to keep the weather going, Ma'am." She puffs up her chest and adopts a proud pose. "Seriously, though, weather-patrolling is kinda a team effort, and I really lean on the rest of the pegasi here." Maybe a little more than she should sometimes!
"Well, you sure have a reputation for getting things done when they need doing. It's a good attribute for a leader to be out in front, leading by example!" One thing Bumble has no trouble appreciating is work ethic. 'Course, she's kind of a busy-bee workaholic, but she enjoys her tasks (and the reward) so much that she hardly considers it work. "And... I wish /I/ could take credit for making the honey, but that's really the bees' job." She admits, watching distractedly as one of the insects buzzes by, absorbed in its duties.
"Hey, it's part of the job," says Rainbow Dash, trying to stretch out her feeling of pride as long as possible. "So...do you have beehives somewhere to make the honey?"
"Oh yes. There are quite a few of them near my cottage, over yonder." Bumble waves a hoof in the general direction. "Big ones, too! Though the bees can skip the hive and put honey into anything I ask them to. They're really more like bee houses, with extra honey storage." She tilts her head with a slightly cautionary smile. "You're welcome to go and have a gander. The bees are mostly friendly."
"It's good, I'm good!" says Rainbow Dash, hiding the fact that she's kinda freaked out by bees. "Do you ever come into town to sell your stuff? I mean, I don't think I've see you around there before..." She peers at Bumblesweet, wondering if she /has/ seen her but forgot.
"Oh.... um. Well, sometimes." The honeymare shifts on her feet a bit awkwardly. "Most of my customers come and find me, thankfully. Though I do set up a booth in the market sometimes, when business is slow. I really... don't like crowds, though." She adds with a flick of her ears, sounding a little embarrassed to admit it.
Rainbow_Dash gives Bumblesweet a funny look. Something's fishy about her story, and she knows it! She can't tell what it is, though: maybe she's just nervous? "Yeah I know what you mean," Rainbow Dash says, remembering rather vividly the Best Young Flier's Competition years ago. "Oh! You ever meet Pinkie Pie and the Cakes?"
Bumblesweet seems to brighten up once the subject of conversation is veered away from her reclusiveness. "Oh yes, I know the Cakes. I have the bees make deliveries to Sugar Cube Corner pretty frequently. Some of my best customers." Not surprisingly, perhaps. She scuffs a hoof. "Not much of a partygoer, so I haven't gotten to know Pinkie Pie yet."
Bumblesweet headtilts. "You're friends with the Cakes too?"
"I know them a little, but not as much as Pinkie does," says Rainbow Dash. "I mean, she kinda rents a room in their house, you know. Actually, I just remembered..." She reaches around and produces a folded-up flyer hidden between her wingfeathers (don't ask). "You wanna join my Jousting Club? It's forming up around the Summer Sun Celebration!" She hoofs Bumble a flyer advertizing 'Jousting: starring RAINBOW DASH!'.
"Jousting?" Bumble asks naturally, blinking. "Ponies still do that?" Well, it is a bit old fashioned. Taking the flyer, she looks it over curiously. "Mind if I keep this? So I don't forget. My memory is pretty terrible sometimes." Once granted, she stashes the flyer in her saddlebag. "Well, I should really be getting out into the forest while there's still daylight left." Notice how she makes no promises about attending... mostly because she plans to lurk around the outskirts of the event to watch while drawing as little attention to herself as possible, while scoping things out. Maybe she's relative of Fluttershy's somehow? She sure seems to have a timid streak.
"Actually, we're trying to engineer a revival and stuff! Ever since we uncovered the Crystal Empire there've been ponies everywhere asking all about this." She noddles as Bumblesweet explains her ongoing work. "Hey, don't wanna hold to back, then. Good talking to ya!" She salutes Bumble again and slowly rises up.
"Nice meeting you!" Bumble replies merrily as RD ascends, feeling a little envious of those wings. Oh, how she longs to fly like a bee sometimes! Alas. She must be content with imagining such things. "See you around!" She adds hopefully. Hey, she may be reclusive, but that doesn't mean that she doesn't like the company of other ponies sometimes. In small doses.
Rainbow_Dash zips off into the wide blue yonder, spreading her wings and letting the wind guide her. Ah, yes, the freedom of flight!
