This is a little scene Spike and I did just before bed, last week. The scene: on their way home, Twilight and Spike were diverted into a short meeting with Luna and Bardigan, to discuss a matter of ancient pony history (also a log worth seeing).
When Spike and Twilight got back home, this was how it went:
Twilight_Sparkle leads Spike to his basket.
You say "Y'know, you're really patient about detours like that one."
Spike climbs into it, bleary-eyed. "Twi, do you think dragons have their own type of magic too, just like pegasi?"
Twilight_Sparkle nods, tucking him in. She could move the blanket telekinetically--it's second nature for her, by now--but doing it with her mouth is how she's done it since he was a tiny little thing and she was a brainy little filly. "I know you do. You can do things nopony in town can do. Dragons are some of the most magical creatures there are."
Spike smiles sleepily. "Maybe someday someone will want to study me."
Twilight_Sparkle smiles back. "I study you every day, Spike. You're fascinating. And I hope we're friends for a very, very long time." She looks around. "Can I tell you a secret?"
Spike says "Of course. I'd never tell anyone your secrets."
Twilight_Sparkle says, "You might not have to worry so much about my lifespan being shorter than yours."
"That would be a relief," Spike admits. "I..can't help but think about that sometimes, and it feels really lonely to think about outliving you."
Twilight_Sparkle nods. "I know you think about it," she says. "Chance mentioned it to me. I haven't told him anything, although I think I'd like to." She looks around. "I think...well, I don't really know how it works, yet. But...I trust Luna, and she's been dropping strong hints."
Spike says "Yeah...I talked to Chance some because...well, you know. He understands. And it was kinda a relief to know *someone* other than the princesses that I could probably count on being around."
Twilight_Sparkle goes on, "And the wings, and the kind of deep magic I'm beginning to understand..."
Spike smiles. "Your wings are beautiful. What's it feel like to have them?"
Twilight_Sparkle rests her hoof, gently, on Spike's belly. "It feels..." She closes her eyes, imagining it. "Whole. Like, everything there is about ponies is in my grasp."
Spike closes his eyes. "That sounds incredible."
Twilight_Sparkle looks down at Spike. "I really want to know you when you're a grownup dragon."
Spike says "Hopefully I'll be nicer than I was last time I got big."
Twilight_Sparkle laughs a little. "You just have to grow up at your own speed. Be a kid as long as you can. You'll probably get a much longer childhood than I did. Believe me...you should try to enjoy that fact."
Spike says "You won't...send me away, or anything, when I get too big?"
Twilight_Sparkle says, "Who knows where I'll be and what I'll be doing, when that happens?"
Twilight_Sparkle says, "But if it helps, Spike, for as long as you want us to be together, I'll do whatever I can to keep us that way."
Spike smiles, his eyes meeting Twilight's. "Thanks, Twilight. I just don't know what I'd do if I couldn't live around ponies. I mean...I don't really fit in anywhere else."
Twilight_Sparkle smiles, and looks back into the little dragon's eyes. "You're family to me, Spike. As much as anypony ever has been."
Spike says "And you're the only family I've ever known."
Spike says "I love you, Twilight."
Twilight_Sparkle says, "I love you too, Spike. I wouldn't be the pony I am without you."
Twilight_Sparkle kisses Spike on the forehead.
Spike rubs his snout against Twilight's muzzle.
Twilight_Sparkle nickers happily, and licks Spike's nose.
Spike rubs his nose. "Ewww."
Twilight_Sparkle giggles.
Twilight_Sparkle's horn flickers, and the room goes dark except for a soft light, illuminating the dragon-and-pony pair. And the world goes quiet, except for a gentle song, played as if somewhere nearby but nowhere in particular, on an instrument you've never quite imagined before but which sounds immediately familiar.
Spike curls up a bit in his little basket-bed, and soon dozes off.
Twilight_Sparkle sits with Spike until he slips into dreaming, then finds her own way to bed, nearby, waiting for the sun but lit by the moon.
