Hello my little ponies! Tis I, Rarity, The girl with the cutest little plot this side of Canterlot! !*Giggle* We have an extra special class tpnight in another addition of The Fine Art of Role Play! Tonight's lesson is meta and technical and may in fact step on a few toes, but remember the following:
But, darlings, before I get into this, theres something I simply MUST address: These views discussed below are simply my own opinions and not such that of Equestira Muck’s Staff, or the hard working wizards that run our little corner of the web!
Now that being said, tonights class is about' The universe' Not the ultimate and infinite unending expanse of the cosmos, dear, but OUR universe, and this is where things get a bit tricky.
I've recently talked with a few ponies interested in joining our little corner of the net. They were asking me what sort of characters might they make, and one suggested a pony whom is incredibly foul mouthed. This struck me as humorous, and odd, but not exactly something that would fit into the pony's universe.
In short, they wanted to make a south park pony whom simply cursed all the time. Another, wanted to make X-men ponies. This seems to be stretching the expanse of the universe a tad. You see, darlings, while the universe, our universe in and of itself, parades pop culture and jokes, they are only jokes and throw away jokes at that.
One character wanted to make a pony that had katanas and was a master ninja and also could teleport and had a machinegun.
Darling, you're thinking of deadpool, I explained.
"But as a pony!" They said.
Darling, that is totally inappropriate for the universe here. Aside from a pony having katanas, a machine gun and teleporting, it just doesn't fit. Where will those things come in handy in ponyville? Who are they going to fight, not to mention the technology doesn't even exist.
We sing songs, and help deal with Twilight's wacky obsessions, and crazy antics. There is the occasional situation where we must defend ourselves, but these aren't the situations where we're jumping around, screaming and throwing ninja stars. Grasping the universe is the first step to creating a character and getting along swimmingly here with the others.
We're not a martial art's testosterone action movie.
We're not south park, and we don't scream obscenities (Really this is a PG rated muck)
We're not Tapestries! The things that go on there are NOT permitted here. Again, a PG rated muck. Absolutely none of that, even if my adorable plot IS rather mouth watering.
We're not a Drama. There should be a lot of light hearted whimsy about, not something serious always going on with your character.
We're not looney tunes either. We've got some semi balance of realism to our wor...Pinkie Pie kind of defeats that particular argument but the rest of it is still valid, I assure you!
Try looking at the episodes in question and trying to figure out if the idea you have would fit. No, no, dear, not if it would be 'cool' if it would fit. Wolverine would not spend his time at Sugar Cube Corner. Nor would anypony that habitually carries about a katana.
Now, of course, it's not my intention to turn anypony away, but I'm terribly concerned of the amount of fun you might have if the pony you want to create has a bionic arm and lives in a post apocalyptic future. The reason some of these things are 'cool' darling, is that they have their OWN universes and should not be mixed with others!
