Dear Princess Luna,
Um, hello there. It's me, Fluttershy - you might remember me from the last couple of times we met. I'm the bearer of Kindness, and one of the six ponies who-
Fluttershy frowned, scratching the quill in her mouth against the parchment. A guilty pang shot up from the back of her skull, telling her it might not do well to detail the events of their last two meetings outright. She dropped the quill and shoved the paper to the corner of her desk to make room for a fresh sheet.
Dear Princess Luna,
Um, hello there. It's me, Fluttershy - you might remember me from the last couple of times we met. I'm very, very sorry about our last meetings-
The yellow pegasus cringed and sighed inwardly. She just couldn't stop herself sometimes; it's not like she hadn't hurt the Princess' feelings, right? She shook her head, collecting her thoughts, and touched her quill back to paper.
-but I heard that the Winter Solstice is coming up soon. Twilight told me that it's the longest night of the year, and since Princess Celestia has a special holiday on the longest day of the year, I thought that this must be your special night, so I thought I would write to wish you well. And...I really hope it isn't too much trouble to ask this, but-
Fluttershy paused again. She looked anxiously over her shoulder at the little white rabbit behind her, who replied by thumping his foot impatiently on the floor and pointing at an imaginary watch. Fluttershy sighed softly and resumed once again.
- I was wondering if, since it's your special night and all, and we'll probably be having some kind of celebration, I guess, then maybe, if you don't mind~e~=&
Fluttershy squeaked as the foot left the floor and thumped against her flank instead, sending her quill careening across the page like a crazed sparrow. Angel poked her in the side and pointed at his wrist again. "Okay, okay," mumbled the pegasus, quickly applying liquid birch to the smear. "I'll...try to get on with it."
-- == I was wondering if you wouldn't mind hearing some good wishes for my friends.
You know Twilight best, I think, so I'll start with her. She's a very powerful magician, which I guess you already know, and she's really the one responsible for bringing all of us - by which I mean, all of us, the six of us and you and everypony - together so closely in the first place, so I was thinking, since she already has your sister's blessing, maybe you could give her something, too, or maybe teach her something about magic she wouldn't learn otherwise. I'm sure she would love that.
Rainbow Dash is a little harder to think of anything for, since she already seems to have everything she needs between her wings and everything floating around in the sky. Well, that, and she sort of has a rivalry with your squire Firefly, you know...I really hope it was okay to mention that. But I was thinking, what she'd really like best is a way to keep flying even in the dark when it gets hard to see anything. Don't tell her I said this, but I also heard that she has a secret love of 'dressing in style', so maybe that would work, too. It's just a thought.
Applejack is a lot like Rainbow Dash. I think you met her again at the last Nightmare Night, too (sorry about bringing that up, I'm really sorry). All she really seems to need is to work her land. Are there any moon fruit you could bring her? Or maybe she'd like to travel a little, so maybe she'd like to go see what farms are like in other parts of Equestria, or even how you grow food in the Everfree Forest.
At least it's not hard to think of something for Pinkie Pie. I'm sure she'd love nothing better than to be signed on as caterer for the biggest party ever. Oh, um, wait - what if you let her help out with your party? Um, assuming you're having one, I mean. And that it's not too much to ask. I know she's really very good at building gadgets, too, and all sorts of things - Pinkie always says there's nothing better than using her talents to make other ponies smile.
And last, but not least - um, none of them are least - there's Rarity. I think she's the only one you didn't meet on Nightmare Night (sorry), but maybe I'm wrong. I think she might have wanted to go as you. The truth is, a lot of times Rarity seems like a pony who already has everything in the whole wide world, but I'm sure there's some wish that would make her happy. Her talent is finding gems, and she's very passionate about art, and this is just between you and me, but I think she's always wanted a chance to live exotic lifestyles outside of Ponyville, and meet...exotic ponies.
There is one more pony I wanted to tell you about. It's the mailpony, Bright Eyes - that's what they used to call her, she goes by Derpy Hooves now. For her-
Fluttershy stared at the unfinished letter for a long time.
...for her, just please do whatever you can.
Again, I really hope this isn't asking too much of you. I'm looking forward to your celebration, Princess! See you soon.
Your friend,I hope,
Fluttershy
(P.S.: Sorry if this is too forward.)
(P.P.S.: I hope you have a wonderful evening.)
(P.P.P.S.: Sorry.)
No sooner had Fluttershy lifted the quill from the page and read back over her work, an insistent cough from her side made her roll her eyes behind her mane.
(P.P.P.P.S.: Angel wants a toy.)
The haughty nod of approval from her companion let Fluttershy know that, this time, she could call the letter definitely finished. She waited for all the ink to dry, quietly fidgeting with her hair - something like this was stepping severely beyond her usual boundaries, but after all, she had wanted to apologize to Princess Luna anyway, and this seemed like a good way to broach the subject nicely. And on top of that, her friends really did deserve to be appreciated, didn't they? Folding the letter carefully with her mouth and hoof, she tucked it into its envelope and took it outside, raising the flag that would attract the local mailmare's attention.
Certainly enough, Derpy noticed right away - Fluttershy could've sworn that the gray pegasus was somehow everywhere at once - and fluttered down from a cloud somewhere, bobbing and weaving in her peculiar way. "Flutter!" said Derpy, more an announcement than a greeting. "Flutter have letter?"
"Oh, um, hello, Derpy. Yes, it's right here."
Derpy took the letter from Fluttershy's muzzle and turned it over appraisingly in her hooves. "Is good letter! Many postscripts. Can feel." She grinned and waggled her eyebrows, an expression Fluttershy was never really sure how to interpret. "Very heavy. Who for?"
"This is a very special letter, Derpy." Fluttershy gestured emphatically without really thinking. "It's for Princess Luna. Just take it to Firefly, and she'll know how to get it there, all right?"
"Fireflyyyyyy." Derpy's eyes rolled around and locked back into place when the thought finished ingraining itself in her mind. "Yes. Moonloaf squire. Very fast, very loud. Will deliver right away! Good letter," she repeated, giving the envelope a gentle lick before tucking it into her bag. "Flutter-Butter! See you soooon!" And Derpy was off, flying backwards into the sky while waving every appendage she had at her little yellow friend.
Fluttershy watched Derpy recede into the sky, waving a hoof and wing until the mailmare was out of sight. "Sorry," she whispered.
