SCOPE
It's becoming late the day and everyone working in the small complex has gone home save for one, a single unicorn donning a white lab coat studying what looks to be an ancient scroll. It's Scop-- err, Sunflare really, wearing his natural orange & red colors complete with the pistachio green eyes behind a pair of glasses. His attention is caught by a flash of an incoming teleport, though when he glances over to see who's arrived the sight causes him a little bit of surprise, brow gently lifting. "Virga? I hadn't expected to see you here, of all places."
VIRGA
Virga had to take a moment to get his bearings straight, as he never went through a direct teleport with exception of one. He instinctively tightened his wings and gazed about until his golden eyes settled on Scope, for that was the name he knew him by. He was not aware the unicorn ever wore glasses, but they made him stand out in a particular sense, the intelligent behind the power. Under a lab coat. "I hope I am not interrupting anything of importance," he said.
SCOPE
For the first time in probably a while, Sunflare's lips curl upward in the makings of a smile while he gives his head a brief shake, telekenesis working to set the scroll off and to the side. "No, not at all. Just killing some time by burying myself in something to keep me distracted." Removing the eyeglasses and squinting a little, the unicorn floats over a small rag and carefully begins to clean a bit of dust from the lense, "What's on your mind?"
VIRGA
Seeing a smile on Scope was something Virga hadn't seen before; internally he chastised himself for not getting to know him more outside of their responsibilities. He knew only a few details about the unicorn, and likely he knew few or fewer things about himself. "Several things," he said, reclining onto his haunches. "Our relation has been nearly absent since we first met and for that I apologize." He bowered his head, fully. One-hundred percent. "First, I'm glad to see you are keeping yourself busy."
SCOPE
Scope pauses mid-rub and glances upward, though that's more out of habit than anything as at the moment all he sees is just a giant blur of various shapes and colors, clearing up only when the glasses settle down upon his nose once more "It's partially my fault, actually You had this mysterious nature about you that I never could get close to understanding, and some of the transformations you've ended up going through.. put me at a sense of unease, so I figured the less contact the better. I do apologize for that, especially now when I'm sure you could use a shoulder to lean on." The smile vanishes and his lips pull tight as he averts his gaze back to the scroll he had been studying along with a few other "trinkets" around. "Though for me, I've been keeping busy because I want to avoid having to lean on somepony."
VIRGA
Virga showed a smile in return for the admission. He was not surprise that his own mystique kept others away. His story was not a simple one, bent and skewered by the workings of magics strange, dark, and often forbidden. "Thank you," he said, lifting his head. He noticed the scroll but said nothing of it for now. "She was important to many, I cannot deny, though other ponies may need of me more now than ever. The primary reason for my visit concerns the matter. You are a military-ranked unicorn in the Sun Guard, but I am not military ranked while part of the Sun Guard. As such, you technically would be the superior officer if not for circumstantials that place us as equals. Once I was asked about assuming command, my thoughts, but after the war with Sombra a command is not my place. You've done very well for yourself, the crown, and Equestria, but I've not seen many thanking you for that."
SCOPE
NOW the "guard" starts to show as Sunflare's eyes narrow just a tad, offering a brisk shake of his head while lifting a hoof, voice taking a far more serious tone than before. "While I'm all for technicality I did not consider you my subordinate by any means, Virga. We took our orders from the Princess, not each other, so I always considered ourselves equal. Besides, you were there first." There's a brief wink after that, but then his ears start to wilt a little and he lets out a small sigh. "Honestly, recently I haven't deserved any thanks. Couldn't stop the princess becoming crystal, couldn't break 'em out, was basically useless when the situation resolved itself and--", a stray, yet rather unpleasant thought crosses his mind, the reason why he's trying to distract himself so much. "..and if I had succeded in preventing the crystallization, Firefly would still be here."
VIRGA
Virga almost chucked when the unicorn winked. "Perhaps not," Virga said. "I too couldn't prevent the crystallization of both Princesses nor free them; whenever Princess Celestia is sealed away I also become unstable, that is my flaw which I will explain if you wish. You still took charge and did what you could, more than I was able." Upon the mention of Firefly, the pegasus reached over with a wing and made to lightly touch Scope on the shoulder. "Possibly, Scope. That is uncertain to my knowledge. The complexities surrounding Firefly are similar to my own in regards to Princess Celestia. I've been to visit Princess Luna, you should know."
SCOPE
The unicorn visibly shudders when the wing makes contact, muscle tensing beneath his coat as his nose wrinkles and he lets out another heavy sigh, "Still.. It's my job to protect them and I failed, and a side effect of that failure is that a comrade's no longer with us. And I have to live with that." Sunflare abruptly pulls himself away and gets to his hooves, stepping a few feet away and snagging a glass of water he had sitting nearby, floating it over with his magic and taking a couple sips to wet his whistle and calm himself down a little. "..Luna, I haven't seen her much at all ever since her return. I really don't think she wants to see me either." Ear flicking, the unicorn glances over his shoulder, speaking after taking another small sip. "I trust she's faring well?"
VIRGA
The pegasus withdrew his wing. He didn't want Scope to feel responsible for Firefly's passing, but he couldn't change those feelings with simple words. "She is faring as alicorn do," he replied. "I believe, however, that you likely should visit her after a time. I've been informed of the full details regarding the current events. If you ask I will tell, but what I tell is not meant for ears outside this tower."
SCOPE
"I've always felt that Luna only tolerates my presence, never felt she actually liked me. So I highly doubt that a visit from me would be a hightlight for her for right now." Finishing off the water, Sunflare turns about to face the other stallion once more and settles back down onto his haunches, ears swivelling forward towards the other. "If you wish to discuss them then proceed. Part of my job IS in secrets if this lab is any indication, so I can keep a secret or two."
VIRGA
Virga admittedly laughed when he said that. Luna 'tolerating' a presence? Yes, he knew that feeling too well. "When Princess Luna and I first met, it was....less than cordial. In fact, she thought me an abomination, a pegasus somehow imbued with unicorn power due to the lack of my kind in the present day." He had to smile about it. The Princess of the Night nearly lost herself when she saw what he did with that cup of tea so long ago. "Of course, she meant much to you, and you deserve to know as Princess Luna felt I deserved to know although I already knew part of it. As you are aware, Firefly was Princess Luna's Squire. I can relate to that position--my transformation came about for similar reasons, a binding to an alicorn. Firefly's devotion to Prinecess Luna fell into the extreme, Scope. I'm sure you're aware how much she enjoyed using power, but that power also became a detriment. The deeper the bond, the more normal ponies such as you and me, are not able to cope. When Princess Lune told me of the
particulars, she blamed herself entirely."
SCOPE
"Losing her has showed me that she meant more to me than I realized." Sunflare's lower lip gets caught by his teeth and he averts his gaze once more, eyes trying to lock onto SOMETHING but ending up moving to and fro, as if searching. "Firefly.. was one of my closest friends. confidant, a comrade, at times a rival and an opponent.. and for a brief time after her sickness she and I were as close as you were to her. But.. we decided that the occasion may rise where we could have to open fire on each other once more, so we decided to remain good friends." There's another brief smile as he remembers those better days, seeming to calm him down a little more. "..My connection to Celestia isn't that extreme. I really just share her magic and some longevity from her gift to me, along with getting another inch or two taller. When she was crystallized all I lost was my magic, but seeing as Fluttershy was an echo of what Celestia used to be the link was restored and I could wield again."
VIRGA
Virga watched Scope closely, his innate caring nature for another on a team--even if it was a Guard duty--had been heightened by Celestia. It was there, in his face, almost as if the Sun Princess herself could see the unicorn. "For a time, Firefly and I also went through a period where we separated for the same reason," he said. "It was shortly after I became a member of the Sun Guard." He stretched his wings and took a breath. "My connection to Celestia came from unfortunate consequences," he said. "In truth, I am likely the most broken and repaired pegasus you'll find. I am a sheer, statistical anomally, that it is a wonder I exist--displace in time, put under repetitious, lengthy slumbers by an alicorn king, a Storm Pegasus as Firefly was, and...formally half Windigo. I am utter freak of nature, but she saw past that. Although I was her husband, I was also confidant, comrade, rival...not quite opponent though she did hit me hard the last time I saw her."
SCOPE
"Yes, you ARE a freak." Blunt and to the point. "But.. aren't we all, in a way? I only learned a couple weeks ago that I could end up living three hundred years, so I guess we could create a secret "Freak" club where membership is by invitation only." Also blunt, but in a far more joking manner, as evidenced by the sly grin curling up on the unicorn's lips. "Though I guess that already exists in the form of the Sun Guard. Gotta have something different about you and also want to protect Equestria, eh?"
VIRGA
"Yes, we are allied by our freakishness." How amazing this conversation went as it would with any of his former Crystalbolts. They also considered themselves freaks for daring to do what most pegasi never would. They could have, but they didn't. And that brought another smile to his muzzle. "I too have an extension on life, so we are stuck together in this way....although some circumstances are to change. There's something I must tell you and soon tell Celestia."
SCOPE
The grin fades just a little as the unicorn takes in those words, eyes squinting behind those glasses as he lifts his head a little. No need to tell him, the tone of those words along with the request itself answered his own internal question. ~~Change? Why not tell Celestia yourself, you're part-- Ohhhhh.~~ "You're going to stand at Luna's side, aren't you? Celestia has both of us, Luna.. doesn't have one, so I assume you'll be taking Firefly's post."
VIRGA
"Yes," Virga said. "I will be transferring to the Night Guard as Luna's champion, but not her Squire unless she wishes it. This does not, however, change anything between us Freaks." He straightened his posture just a bit. "I was asked to request the transfer by Firefly long ago, if something happened to her. I believe Princess Luna needs me more than she'd admit. For the Sun Guard, I want to ask something of you, Scope."
SCOPE
"Well.. assuming Luna snags me for a random night shift, there's a chance that I'll be attending a couple night court sessions with you. But with recent events I don't believe she'll be calling on me that often, especially now." At the request, Sunny's head tilts just a bit once again and he gives the other ponywhatever a nod, flashing a calm smile now.
VIRGA
"It would be good if we had missions together, yes," Virga said as his ears turned forward. "Firefly and I only flew one together, in Detrot....but yes, what I've to ask of you is something to take at your own pace. You do well for the Sun Guard, and despite the things that happen, you are one of the strongest unicorns I've met. You'd probably have given my first wife, Tourmaline, a very difficult time. I ask that you seek the unique, the misfits with a penchant for what makes you and me what we are. The Night Court has several individuals, but the Day Court is lacking in number. Find an earth pony, a pegasus, or perhaps take a young unicorn for an apprentice towards the goal of becoming Sun Guard. I had planned to do so myself."
SCOPE
"What you ask.. is difficult.", Sunflare's nose twitches and he gives a slow shake of his head, reaching a hoof upward as his head ducks down to rub into the back of his mane. "I don't have the patience to teach anypony anything, I've already tried once and failed at that. I'm far too irritable when something doesn't go right the first time, things I'd much rather do myself than break down just how to do things. I mean.." The unicorn pauses and takes in a breath, letting it out moments later while visibly drooping, giving a somewhat defeated smile. "I will try."
VIRGA
Virga chuckled. Yes, he proposed a challenging thing for Scope but it likely would do good. One educated like him should have an apprentice of sorts, but it had to be the right one. "Hence why I say, at your own pace. It may take awhile, but with the right, promising recruit you may find yourself at ease." He paused a moment and reached to a satchel hidden under his left wing. "I've something to give you, actually.
SCOPE
Scope peers at the sudden satchel with some suspicion, glancing upward and leaning away with a cautious grin. "Y'aren't here to lull me into a false sense of security and then secretly take me out, are ya? Cause if so then you've done a fair job and I applaud you."
VIRGA
"Of course not," Virga answered, pulling a very old, worn, and certainly ancient cylinder that had seen too many years stored away somewhere. It was a pale cream, capped in bronze alicorn effigies. "While I find the idea of deception intriguing and applicable, it is not...my style. Such things belonged to Sombra and the writer of this scroll."
SCOPE
The cylinder is surrounded by the unicorn's magic and lifted out of the flyer's grasp with gentle tekenesis, floating before the unicorn's glasses for closer inspection. "Indeed. This should make an interesting addition to my collection of old things I have stashed in here."
VIRGA
"This is a specialized scroll," Virga explained, watching Scope. "It is a record from the lost Kingdom of Efrelib, a monastic settlement that thrived on Mt. Everfree. Written by King Orbello, the alicorn who raised me in the arctic wastes, it is a deep schematic for advanced unicorn magics. You may find that to your interest."
SCOPE
"Indeed. I'll take a glance at it, hopefully it'll help me try to figure out some of Starswirl's old trinkets and decipher some of his scrolls. Been at a standstill in my work with some of these." The gift is slowly placed in a box along with the other scroll he was working on when Virga first arrived, the lid shutting and locking with some sort of spell. "Thank you...It's getting late, I should be heading home and you should probably get to your new job."
VIRGA
"That I should," replied the Pegasus. He sat straight and prepared to teleport out. "Have a good night, Scope."
SCOPE
Taking aim with his horn, the Storm flyer is surrounded by the unicorn's aura and Sunny closes his eyes to concentrate. He doesn't teleport other ponies THAT often so he isn't as skilled as if he was doing just himself. "Same to you, Virga... Thanks for stopping by." There's a smile, and the pegasus vanishes in a flash of gold to that hallway he was in when the guard on duty performed the initial teleport. Now he concentrates on his own destination, disappearing in another flash & *PAMF*
